from Day Hikes Around Santa Barbara... Hike 106: Point Sal.
Remote Point Sal, at the northwest end of Santa Barbara County, is backdropped by the 1,200-foot Casmalia Hills. The windswept point is located at the north end of Vandenberg Air Force Base and west of Santa Maria. This hike follows abandoned Point Sal Road to an overlook atop Point Sal Ridge. The road, which crosses the northern corner of the air force base, is open only to foot and bike traffic. The spectacular views include Point Sal Ridge as it emerges to Point Sal, the secluded Point Sal Beach at the base of the steep bluffs, and Lion Rock. The coastal views extend from Point Arguello in the south to Point Buchon at Montaña de Oro State Park in the north. Past the overlook, the old road descends 1,200 feet to the remote shoreline at Point Sal State Beach. (followed by driving and hiking directions, map)
