Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Children learn in this book how zookeepers start their days, how they care for the animals, what they feed the animals, what tools they use, and who helps a zookeeper, among other things. The first page, with a clock showing 8:00 in the morning, tells how zookeepers check on the animals first thing. Clocks are featured on succeeding pages as children follow Zookeeper Nicki through a typical day. Illustrations showing Nicki in action are as interesting as the simple, clear descriptions of all that she does in one day. Children will learn that not only does she spend time checking, feeding, and caring for the animals, she also is responsible for cleaning up after them. An equipment photo diagram shows Nicki with the various tools she uses in her job. Fun facts, such as "Today, most zoo animals are born in zoos, not in the wild" are sprinkled through the book. The book in Capstone's "Community Helpers at Work" series includes a glossary, books for further reading, information on accessing Internet sites through the publisher's "FactHound," feature, and an index. Some of the other books in the series look at a day in the life of a dentist, a firefighter, a librarian, a teacher, a veterinarian, and a garbage collector. 2005, Capstone Press, Ages 4 to 8.

Encourage Conservation of Animals and Habitats

I'm glad there are books that encourage kids to care about animals! You can have any career but one working with animals is very rewarding. We all need to recycle to save habitats for humans and animals.
