Overview

Born and raised in southern Oregon farm country, Ellie Spaneker flees her home and abusive husband, unaware she's being tracked by an ex-cop in the hire of her vengeful father-in-law. In Portland, retired homicide detective Skin Kadash fills his idle days drinking coffee and searching for Eager Gillespie, a teen runaway of special interest as the only witness in a troublesome and long-unsolved murder. Eager, meanwhile, is on his own, grifting and oblivious to the danger he's in.

Bill Cameron lives in Portland, Oregon. His previous novels are Lost Dog and Chasing Smoke.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Set in Portland, Ore., Cameron’s richly flavored if contrived third crime novel opens with what looks like a familiar urban domestic crisis. But when battered ex-cop Skin Kadash, last seen in Chasing Smoke (2008), scans the crowd gathered outside the house in his neighborhood where a man supposedly has gone berserk and pulled a gun on his family, Skin recognizes the teenage skateboarder who was the sole witness to an unsolved Jane Doe murder a few years before—and so begins wondering whether the two outbursts of violence could be related. Like Skin, readers may become obsessed with making unlikely connections, as the book offers a montage of narrative fragments from different times and viewpoints, interspersed with “objective” but semi-informed newspaper reports. The characters’ operatically intense passions are powerful, but the extreme coincidences underlying the plot weaken the overall impact. (June)
Library Journal
Retired homicide detective Skin Kadash (Chasing Smoke) resides across the street from a woman who lives in constant fear that her abusive ex-husband will find her. Meanwhle Skin is trying to track down a runaway teen who had witnessed a long-ago murder. VERDICT Readers will get caught up in this thriller's various plot threads, which will lead them to a sad yet satisfying conclusion.

I rarely struggle with my resolve to finish a book, but this one

I rarely struggle with resolve to finish a book, but this one was a test of that resolve. It was only in the last few pgs that I finally found 1 of the characters the least bit appealing. Ellie managed to pull that off by revealing the grit she hadn't shown through the entire book ... despite her fight with & escape from Stuart. I had accepted Ellie as too weak to survive & the rest of the cast of characters as downright evil to-the-core or mean-spirited at best. Even Stuart's final act of redemption to set Ellie & Danny free didn't sway me to forgive him. It all seemed like such a terrible waste of humanity (Luellen, Eager, Pastor) & my time. It wasn't even exciting ... just depressing.

I, too, read a couple of Mr. Cameron's books and really enjoyed them. Then I got "Day One". I have been trying to read it for almost 2 months and am finally giving up. I agree with the other reviewer about the jumping around between past and present. Too confusing!

    Hard to follow.

I wanted to read all of Bill Cameron's Det. Kadash books after I got his latest - County Line - as a free friday nook book. Chasing Smoke was great. Day One, not so much. I found it really hard to read because he keeps jumping into the past. There was too much history to keep track of and too many characters. I found myself thumbing back to the beginning chapters to identify characters that come into play later in the book. I know I missed some of the story line because I was so confused. I still really like Dt. Kadash and plan to read Lost Dog.
