    A wonderful, long-overdue collection of hard-to-find SF!

What a wonderful treat it is to hold this book in my hands! I first encountered Steve Antczak at the World Science Fiction Convention in 1986, when he was little more than a punk-rock bum without a dime (or a single professional writing credit) to his name. We were both standing in line to get Harlan Ellison¿s autograph, and I was immediately impressed by his insight, wit and literary ambition. Over the years we kept in touch, and I watched him slowly blossom into a full-bore professional writer. He often showed me the manuscripts of his stories before he submitted them to editors, and as I read his work I was amazed and delighted at his creativity, by his knack for the offbeat and the bizarre, and by how well the science fiction genre suited his particular talents. At his best, Antczak even brought in realistic elements of his then- daily experiences with the Florida punk rock scene. One sweet example is his classic ¿Pop Goes Weasel,¿ a story about a time-traveling rock singer, which Antczak inventively tells from the point of view of a lonely groupie who misses the traveler during the periods when he¿s gone. What has frustrated me over the years was my inability to collect a whole set of Antczak¿s work. His stories appeared literally all over the map, from tiny little fanzines with very small print runs, all the way to prestigious literary anthologies published in foreign countries. My favorite of all his tales, the eerily prophetic future music- business fable ¿Reed John-Paul Forever,¿ was published in a British antho that I never had any opportunity to buy. As a professional music journalist, I fell in totally in love with the ¿Reed John-Paul¿ story (and never forgot it) way back when I did a quick proofread of Antczak¿s first rough draft, but for the next 12 years I never had any chance to own my own personal copy of it! I¿m therefore delighted by the publication of DAYDREAMS UNDERTAKEN, which rounds up all the terrific Antczak short stories I¿ve remembered and treasured, and binds them together in one handy, convenient and downright unforgettable volume. I just re-read ¿Reed John-Paul Forever¿ for the first time in more than a decade, and it¿s even better than I remembered it. This is a gem of a book!
