School Library Journal

Gr 1-3

This Haggadah offers colorful, child-friendly illustrations and interweaves the traditional prayers with songs that explain the Passover Seder rituals in simple terms. In nearly an hour of audio on the accompanying CD, Leon and a choir of children narrate the Haggadah, chant the prayers, and sing Passover songs that flesh out the story of Moses and Pharoah. The printed lyrics do not stand alone well. The music is pleasant if somewhat slow-paced, but families using this book to guide their celebrations can choose from among the 26 tracks to craft a Seder that works for them. The audio makes this Haggadah useful for those who may not know the prayers, yet little background about the holiday is provided, limiting the audience to those with some previous knowledge.-Heidi Estrin, Feldman Children's Library at Congregation B'nai Israel, Boca Raton, FL

Kirkus Reviews
Earlychildhood educator Leon makes the Passover story and Seder ceremony an enjoyable experience for preschool children and young families in this succinct retelling of the Jews' flight for freedom from slavery. Clear explanations for each ceremonial food and ritual appear in a lively, colorcoded text with dual Hebrew and transliterated equivalents, encouraging roleplaying at the table; characters from the villainous Pharaoh, to the Prophet Elijah, Miriam and Moses, to all ten plagues are represented. Easytolearn, catchy, rhythmic songs that capture traditional Hebrew prayers combine with original English folksongs, further adding to the playfulness. It will also serve as a sound introduction to the holiday and its significance at school mock Seders. While it doesn't approach the majesty of Eric A. Kimmel's Wonders and Miracles (2004), its value in a preschool setting makes it a worthwhile investment. Regrettably, there is no written music, although a CD offering narration and musical presentations from the author and a children's choir is available (for a price) with either edition (hardcover + CD $24.95, 9781602800427; paper + CD $16.95, 9781602800403).
