Overview

Nearly sixty million Americans have recently rediscovered the joys of walking - or dayhiking - because it's so easy, satisfying, productive, and adventurous. Dayhiking offers something for everyone - healthy and physical stimulation, relaxation, fitness, increased energy, lowered blood pressure, relief from stress, dependable weight loss, solitude, communion with nature, and a deep sense of achievement. It's also free, safe, and fun. No wonder dayhiking is America's newest outdoor sports boom.

This handy book shows you how to enjoy the full range of delightful dayhiking possibilities, from an exuberant five-minute jaunt on you lunch break to an all day trek in the wilderness.

Dayhiker describes seven basic types of walks (aerobics, 'quickies,' half days, full days, combinations, extended trips, and climbs). And it provides the expert tips you need to get the utmost from each. Other chapters cover the secrets of going light, where to go, what to take, trail manners, walking technique, hiking with children, reading the weather, route finding, and more. Special features include eating for greater energy and weight loss, and trailside first aid revolutionized through homeopathy.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Outdoorsperson Wood, author of The 2 Oz. Backpacker (Ten Speed Pr., 1982) and Pleasure Packing for the '80s (Ten Speed Pr., 1981), shares his hiking experiences and offers advice for novices as well as seasoned walkers. Wood's enthusiasm is conveyed in ten chapters covering major points of interest to the beginning dayhiker: where to find the best trails, how to conserve energy, what to eat, how to select clothing and equipment, how to handle trailside first aid, and how to find a route. Unfortunately, Wood's chapter on map and compass reading is too brief, while his nutritional advice (e.g., eat only fruit before noon) and espousal of homeopathic first aid remedies are open to debate. A lack of a bibliography is an important omission. Nevertheless, there is much valuable information on hiking technique, preparation, and places to go. Recommended as a supplement to public library outdoor recreation collections--especially at this price.-- Sandra Math, St. John's Univ. Lib., Staten Island, New York
