Overview

There are love stories and then there's Days Like These—the story of Kristian and Rachel Anderson.

When Kristian wanted to show his wife, Rachel, how much he loved her after learning he was terminally ill, he ended up winning a million hearts around the world, thanks to the now famous YouTube video he made for her 35th birthday. This heartfelt and moving tribute by a young Australian father of two and his battle with cancer drew attention to a much larger story—an ordeal so many families face alone.

Like Oprah, who invited Kristian and Rachel on her show, and Hugh Jackman, who helped make one of Kristian's dreams come true by appearing on the tribute, though we didn't know him, we were so inspired by him we felt like we did.

He touched lives, gave hope, and left behind a precious legacy that will mean a longer and better quality of life for thousands of cancer sufferers.

His story, told in his own words from his blog entries, with additions from his beloved Rachel, will inspire you to know that even in your darkest moments, the light can shine through.

As I have been reflecting on my week, I have been reading this book called "Days Like These" written by Kristian and Rachel Anderson. Kristian Anderson is a young husband battling bowl cancer. His story is moving and an ordinary person who loves extraordinary. His story leaves such a legacy to those facing cancer and those who have lost a loved one.  He even made this Youtube video for his wife's Birthday. Take a peek. It's very inspiring and humbling.   As I reflect on the human, father, son and husband he was, I am reminded that we must love deeply. He also has made me remember when I feel like I've reached the end, I still can stand and keep moving forward. My reflection comes from a place of ... How will I be remembered? What legacy did I leave here? Aren't these questions we long to ask ourselves and wonder the answers?  I am reminded by Kristian and his wide, Rachel, life is short. Every moment counts and live life to the fullest. You never know when a trip to the doctor could turn fatal.. "Days Like These" will bring perspective back into your life. It did for me. Question: How do you want people to remember you?

Reviewing a poorly written book wastes my time so I seldom bother. Therefore, 99.9% of the reviews I post on-line represent worthwhile books. However, maybe once every year or two a book comes along that far outshines others. Days Like These is one of those exceptional volumes. I relate personally to this story because of similar experiences. Kristian Anderson was a 35 year old Australian blogger fighting colon cancer. Hundreds of thousands read his blog, heard of his love for his wife and his expressions of faith in God. Even Oprah invited him to share on her show. Other unusual events happened for this family during the battle with cancer. Other cancer patients will relate to deeply to Kristian’s writing. His story will help family and friends gain a necessary understanding about the thinking and emotions of cancer patients. For example, Kristian sometimes felt like Jekyll and Hyde, wanting to remain kind and loving, but failing. The author doesn’t answer certain questions--like why some promises from God he believed didn’t happen. Do we sometimes decide God intends certain Bible promises to be true in our lives, without specifically hearing that God means the promise for US? We assume things God didn’t personally say because that’s what we want so desperately. God’s plans may be far different and greater. The ending of Days Like These is sad, sweet and unforgettable. The impact of Kristian’s life story on people around the world is huge and immeasurable.

Such a good book! I couldn't tear myself away from it, it was that good. This is the story of Kristian Anderson's fight with cancer and the faith he has in God's healing power is remarkable. It is an honest book, refreshingly so. At times I almost felt like I was reading Anderson's personal journal, or a writing that would be reserved for his family. The choice to share it with the world provides encouragement for anyone who reads it. This book is literally a man's walk through cancer, complete with raw emotion and life-giving scriptures that kept Kristian fighting throughout the battle. This book is touching and I would highly recommend it. But I would also advise a box of tissues nearby... This book was given to me through the Booksneeze program, though I am under no obligation to provide a positive review.

If you read this book, keep a box of tissues nearby because I'm almost positive you will cry. And I really should say WHEN you read this book because you definitely should. "Days Like These" is a collection of blog posts by Kristian Anderson, an Australian father of two in his mid-30s who was diagnosed with bowel cancer and fought it valiantly for two years before passing away in January 2012. The writing is very emotional and conversational, so this is not the type of book where you really can nitpick about grammar, etc - and trust me, I'm a self-proclaimed "grammar nazi." But to be that critical here would completely negate the point of Anderson's posts. Anderson became famous when a video he made for his wife, featuring Australian actor Hugh Jackman, went viral. The couple even ended up on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" when she filmed for a week in Australia. Side note: I wish there had been slightly more information about these events because I had never heard of Anderson prior to reading this book, but this doesn't significantly distract from the discussion. In his blog posts (with a discussion/explanation from his wife at the end of each chapter), Anderson talks about the highs and lows of battling cancer, especially when you're trying to stick around for your family. Most importantly, though, he details his UNWAVERING faith in God, his belief that God has not forsaken him and has brought cancer into his life for a reason. I can't fathom maintaining such an outlook in the face of a cancer battle, but this made me think about how steadfast I can be with my own trials. My heart aches that Anderson lost his fight, but I thank him for his honesty and willingness to make his battle as worthwhile as possible. I honestly can say this book has changed my outlook on life, and I highly recommend you read this too in the hopes it will do the same for you. Note: I received a review copy of this book from the publisher, Zondervan.

Days Like These- Even in the Darkest of Moments Light Can Shine Through by Kristian & Rachel Anderson chronicles the inspiring cancer journey and the faith of a husband and father of two young boys. Most importantly, this book will give readers the strength to face any hardship or tragedy "even when the miracle doesn't come". In contrast to so many memoirs and autobiographies with happy fairy tale endings, this inspirational family held onto their faith despite adversity, despite terminal illness and even in the face of failing health and unsuccessful medical treatments. Where most people would give up in despair, this book depicts happy content photos taken by Kristian Anderson weeks before his passing. Despite learning the news that his chemo had failed to treat his cancer, and that the tumors would continue to grow, his faith in God remained strong. His journey will empower other readers facing cancer, or any other terminal, acute or chronic illness. This book is based on Kristian's blog entries over the course of two years from his diagnosis to shortly before his death. The reader follows the journey in Kristian's own words- with some insertions and additions by his wife, Rachel. Also included are Kristian's prayers and bible verses- a testament to his faith. In fact I am sure the selected verses and bible excerpts that he selected for his blog not only offered him comfort in the midst of pain and emotional anguish but will also provide comfort to the reader in the face of tragedy and grief. In fact, I read this book not only once but twice in order to absorb and meditate on the wealth of bible verses that Kristian carefully selected. Clearly he as well as his wife, depended on God. In addition to the spiritual side of the cancer journey there is significant medical information included. In fact I found this book very educational in learning about the medical and scientific side of cancer and its treatment as well as the physical and emotional aspects of treatment. While I recommend this book as inspiring for anyone especially those in the midst of tragedy I would be hesitant to give this book as a gift to anyone going through cancer because the end of the book coincides with Kristian's death. Regardless of however inspirational this story is- for someone who is actually fighting to beat cancer and survive, the ending might be a bit disheartening. As a blogger for Booksneeze, I received this book published by Zondervan publishers for the purpose of writing this review.
