Tom Gordon-Levitt is an aspiring architect who currently earns his living as a greeting card writer. Upon encountering his boss' beautiful new secretary, Summer Deschanel, Tom discovers that the pair have plenty in common despite the fact that she's seemingly out of his league; for starters, they both love The Smiths, and they're both fans of surrealist artist Magritte. Before long Tom is smitten. All he can think about is Summer. Tom believes deeply in the concept of soul mates, and he's finally found his. Unfortunately for Tom, Summer sees true love as the stuff of fairy tales, and isn't looking for romance. Undaunted and undeterred by his breezy lover's casual stance on relationships, Tom summons all of his might and courage to pursue Summer and convince her that their love is real.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Technically, 500 Days of Summer is a romantic comedy, but compared to most movies in the genre, it stands by itself -- a movie so genuinely funny and achingly poignant, it deserves to be shelved in its own section, far away from the usual, uncreative lot of 27 Dresses and The Proposal. It stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Tom, a twentysomething writer at a greeting card company, whose self-professed misperception of idealized love stems from a youth devoted to sad British pop songs and "a complete misreading of the movie The Graduate." Unrealistically primed for an epic and consummate True Love, he falls hard for the chronically bewitching Summer Zooey Deschanel, whose beauty and charm belie the fact that she doesn't really believe in love at all. Nonetheless, she and Tom begin an affair under the pretense of "keeping it casual," and Tom starts to believe that he's changing her mind about the whole thing. While the magic of new romance is blooming, Tom is all aglow, and his life becomes a Hall & Oates music video as he struts down the street to work. When things with Summer have reached their inevitable crash in glimpses that cut in directly from the happy moments, in a clever presentation of the nonlinear timeline, his world becomes a depressing black-and-white French art film, with balloons slipping away into the sky, and creepy little kids beating him at chess. Carrying the torch of John Cusack-style, male-centric romantic comedies, 500 Days of Summer bears a favorable resemblance to 1999's High Fidelity. It feels just as relevant as ever for a movie to point out how narcissistic romantic notions can be, and 500 Days does it with a sympathetic hand, and a lot of creativity. It manages to deliver a love story that gets you invested even though you know it can't end neatly with either happiness or tragedy, but rather with a bittersweet mishmash of imperfection -- one that everybody can probably relate to.

    I Also Recommend:

Funny...and not as predictable as you would think.

I really enjoyed this movie and would love to see it again. It's not told with a straight-forward timeline which keeps you hoping for a happy ending for Tom and Summer. I loved the soundtrack and the scenes at Ikea were cute. It's not the most in depth story line but it is told in a clever way that makes you smile and actually laugh out loud - if you have lived through the 80's.

    500 Days of Awesome

This is one of my top 3 favorite movies. Yes, the plot wouldn't necessarily be considered the most original. Boy meets girl. We've all heard that one before. What makes this film such a hit is how they present the story, with a fantastic must have soundtrack, great acting, and creative camera styles. Old concept w/new, improved, more relatable twist. Some highlights: Hall and Oates dance scene incorporating animation, expectations vs. reality, greeting cards, The Smiths. Saw twice in theaters. Can't wait for Tuesday. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

"You make my dreams come true"

Can you really go wrong with a movie featuring music from Hall and Oates? I think NOT! 500 days of Summer did not disappoint my high expectations and has rightfully ended at the top of my 2009 best movie list (if not in one of my all time favorite list of movies). This film is utterly unique in it's unexpected scenes and awesome soundtrack (it's sometimes like watching a really really good music video). I loved the clever dialogue and all of the actors' performances. I really can't complain. Kudos to the entire cast for putting up a great performance and to the director for making a love story different and fun to watch, something that romantic comedies seem to miss doing now-a-days.

    I Also Recommend:

Great movie with good performances especially by Joseph Gordon Levitt.

Been wanting to see this movie for a while and glad I did. The story is told through days from how Tom met Summer and their relationship. The music is pretty good. While the plot has been told before (boy meets girl), I still liked the movie and recommend you see it too.

"This is a story of boy meets girl. But you should know upfront, this is not a love story."

500 Days of Summer met every expectation I had and more, it steals the show! It is one of the most honest stories about relationships I can remember ever being on the big screen, and it really hit home. Tom Hansen meets Summer Finn and falls head over heels in love with her. Problems occur when Tom realizes that Summer does not believe in love. In fact, Summer says she simply wants to live her life in the moment without putting labels on her relationship with Tom. She lives her life by the saying, "there is no such thing as a fantasy." The couple is such a perfect match for each other but all good things must come to an end. I can watch this movie over and over without getting tired of it. I have seen many romantic comedies, but this one in particular stands out the most to me. Sure, the plot is typical; boy meets girl, boy falls in love, and the girl does not. It is the acting, music, and vibe this movie gives to the audience that puts it movie over the edge.

500 Days of Summer will keep your attention, along with catchy song lyrics stuck in your head all day. The two lead characters, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel are as quirky and likable as the movie itself. The media usually portrays girls as being overly obsessed with love and marriage while guys are the independent ones and only care to use girls for their own personal gain. This is a story about how love is confusing, unpredictable, and about how love sometimes can fail. I think it is about time there is a good movie about a man's perspective of heartbreak rather than a woman's. We experience Tom's week of depression after his break up with Summer, surviving on only Twinkies, aspirin, and alcohol. No matter how much the audience or Tom wants to hate Summer, her unconditional charm will keep you interested in her, even if she just broke your heart into a thousand pieces. The film jumps from day to day experiences with these two, including lighthearted fun, comedy, love, disagreements, and heartbreak.

This movie is not a 'chick-flick', so do not stray away, boys! I feel like everyone has a story like this, a story of heartbreak. That is why this is a universally appealing theme. If you have not been through something like this then you will at some point in life. Love can be a beautiful thing. We are surrounded by love every day, but it is not simple. Sometimes love is sad and painful and a lot of movies that come out of Hollywood are afraid to show that side because they think audiences do not want to see it. In my opinion, audiences do want to see something that is more real rather than a fairytale. I think that is why a lot of people enjoy this film. 500 Days of Summer proves that if you want to know what love is, you cannot ask anyone else. You cannot listen to movies, songs, and other people's experiences; you have to figure it out for yourself.

The DVD of 500 Days of Summer includes commentary from the director, the writers, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. This DVD also contains fourteen minutes of deleted scenes as well as extended scenes. I would recommend getting the Blu-Ray version of this DVD because it makes the picture much clearer and makes you feel like you are actually there on set with the actors!

Overall, this is a great family film and is suitable for people of all ages. I would recommend it to my grandmother, nephew, sister, and ex-boyfriend. If you like The Ugly Truth and He's Just Not That Into You, then you will love 500 Days of
