Overview

Bringing the world of DC Comics to your fingertips, Fandex celebrates Super Heroes and Villains and their larger-than-life stories in a deluxe edition of 75 individually die-cut, full-color cards.

Meet the young Bruce Wayne, whose inspiration for Batman came crashing through a window. Brainiac with a “twelfth level” intellect, who literally bottled civilizations. Hawkman and Hawkgirl, subjected to cycle after cycle of death and reincarnation after their souls bonded in Ancient Egypt. The vapid playboy Ollie Queen who, stranded on an island in the South Seas, is dubbed “Auu Lanu Lau’Ava” or Green Arrow by the natives. Plus Superman, Lex Luthor, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, the Joker, Captain Marvel, Robin, and many more.

Obsessively researched, the deck unfolds with layers of information, including biographies, origin stories, motivations, secret affiliations, mysterious powers and weaknesses, plus the year and issue each character made its debut. From the essential—the Crisis on Infinite Earths—to the offbeat—how Penguin sold his own memorabilia—it’s a complete history of the DC Comics universe.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Michael Jung PhD
Readers get to learn about the secret histories and powers of their favorite DC Comics superheroes (and villains) in this field guide that provides an up-to-date (as of 2009) run down of iconic characters such as Superman, Batman, and Lex Luthor, as well as a revealing look at more obscure heroes and villains such as Firestorm and Black Adam. Each "page" of the guide is a die-cut, bookmark-shaped card filled with statistics of each hero and villain, along with a brief but detailed history of their exploits. The cards are connected by a single stud, requiring readers to rotate each card to read each one. It's a creative design—inspired by both comic book trading cards and encyclopedias—yet ultimately, the design is much too awkward to be read efficiently and is too flimsy and impractical for library use. While it will undoubtedly make a memorable present for comic book collectors and kids, librarians would be better served with a more durable book like DK Children's Superman: The Ultimate Guide to the Man of Steel.
