Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Raina Sedore
Have you ever wondered what kind of pet Poison Ivy, Batman's enemy, owns? Have you ever considered what superpowers Aqualad's walrus might have? This brightly colored guide profiles hundreds of animal companions to the superfolk of the DC universe. Children will be drawn to the simple layout and cute illustrations of a wide variety of animals, but those who dwell on the text will find little to hold their interest. Some of the profiles consist of merely an illustration next to one-word entries for species, power, and food. Many of the powers are named, but not described at all (does the Golden Necklace that Leepa—Wonder Girl's Kanga Mouse—wears have any super properties? And if so, what are they?). These characters appear in "DC Super-Pets," the recent series of graphic novels for children from DC, and most are completely new to the DC universe. Only a single spread, placed between the Hero and Villain halves of the book, discusses the history of a few of these characters prior to the Super-Pets line being launched. Although this may be an essential purchase for any fan of the Super-Pets comics, many will be disappointed by the lack of content or depth. Reviewer: Raina Sedore

Steve Korte is a freelance writer. At DC Comics he edited over 500 books. Among the titles he edited are "75 Years of DC Comics", winner of the 2011 Eisner Award, and "Jack Cole and Plastic Man", winner of the 2002 Harvey Award. He lives in New York City with his own super-cat Duke.

Born in Chicago, Art Baltazar found his way early to comic book art and has been cartooning ever since he can recall. With a frenetic, hip hop style, Baltazar began self-publishing in 1994 with such titles as The Cray-Baby Adventures, Gyro-Man, Captain Camel & the Space Chicken, Jimmy Dydo, Lunar Lizard, Meteor Mite and the famous Patrick the Wolf Boy. Art has also drawn coloring books for Warner Bros. Art recently finished work on SUPERMAN FAMILY ADVENTURES, and is now co-writing the new series THE GREEN TEAM: TEEN TRILLIONAIRES. Art lives outside of Chicago with his wife, Rose, and children Sonny, Gordon, and Audrey.

Donald Lemke works as a children’s book editor. He has written dozens of comic books, including the Zinc Alloy series and the adventures of Bike Rider, and many chapter books for DC Comics. Donald lives in Minnesota with his beautiful wife, Amy, and their not-so-golden retriever, Paulie.
