Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In this beginning reader, a father and son are on a fishing trip. Joe and his father go through all the steps to catch fish for dinner, everything from preparing the bait on the fishing line, watching the floaters at the end of their line, seeing fish bop from the water, the tug of their fishing line, and each one respectively reeling in a fish for their take home meal. Since this is a purple level in the "Read It! Readers" series, the text is only one line on each two pages openly displayed for the reader. The selection will make a great introduction to young emerging readers still grasping the mastery of words and simple sentence structure. The text purposefully uses high frequency words and sight words. The illustrations are simplistic but aesthetically pleasing for beginning readers. A fine balance is brought with the text and pictures. An Accelerated Reader quiz is available for this title. 2006, Picture Window Books, Ages 4 to 9.

Meet the Author

Susan Blackaby started writing in Mrs. Nichols' third grade class at Green Gables. She didn't think of becoming a writer until she had tried a few other things, including goat milking and weaving.

Over the past 20 years, Susan has written textbooks, workbooks, and readers by the dozen for kids in elementary school. In 2002, her first trade book, Rembrandt's Hat, was named one of the top ten picture books of the year by the Washington Post.

Susan lives in Portland, Oregon, with two people, two labs, and the nicest kitty in the world.
