Biography

Reading the coyly self-deprecating autobiography on her web site, one gets the distinct impression that MaryJanice Davidson does not have the slightest interest in talking about herself. Perhaps it's because she simply doesn't have the time. Prolific does not begin to describe this chart-busting dynamo, the author of four bestselling series and literally dozens of novellas and short stories.

A writer with a few romances and YA novels to her credit, Davidson had tried for years to interest publishers in her idea for a humorous, tongue-in-cheek vampire romance. After dozens of rejections (and assurances that there was no market for paranormal!), she submitted her manuscript for publication online. An editor at a New York publishing house downloaded the story, was royally entertained, and contacted Davidson to acquire the print rights to Undead and Unwed. On the spot, she was offered a three-book contract.

When Undead and Unwed and its wry sequel, Undead and Unemployed, were released in early 2004, not one, but two stars were born: Davidson and her irresistible protagonist, the reluctant vampire queen Betsy Taylor. A smart, sassy, 27-year-old secretary, Betsy is killed in a freak car accident and wakes up (so to speak) to discover that she is not only a vampire but the much-prophesied Queen of the Undead. As she writes on her website, Davidson lived a transient life as a young girl. Her father's career in the U.S. Air Force led her to live in such disparate locales as Guam, Mississippi, and North Dakota. As she grew older, her life in the working world was just as restless as her childhood. She tried her hand at everything from waitressing to modeling to editing to a stint as a medical test subject (!) before settling on a career as a bestselling novelist. These days, her life may be a bit more settled, but it has hardly slowed down.

    Typical MJD

    I agree with the other reviewer who said not to read all four of the short stories in DEAD AND LOVING IT all at once. Read back-to-back, although a quick read, the stories are all extremely similar--there are even phrases in the stories that have been used, word for word, in the one that came before it. That said, all four stories deal in some way with werewolves, specifically ones from the Wyndham clan. The stories are short, sexy, and to the point. Although I enjoyed the premise of all of them, the use of the 'c' word to describe the female anatomy irked me, so much so that I had to, at times, set the book aside. However, SANTA CLAWS, MONSTER LOVE, THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS A WEREWOLF, and A FIEND IN NEED are all fast-paced stories that die-hard fans of MJD will enjoy. Overall, not a bad book, although the typographical errors and the repetitive phrases (even some entire scenes appeared recycled from the previous short story) keep it from being a true winner.

    Four amusing romantic fantasy stories

Vampire Richard Hill looked forward to falling in love that is until he did.     "Dead and Loving It" introduced me to the creative world of Mary Janice Davidson and she is all about being extra original. After the first story in her novella I was hooked!

    The book itself has several short stories that entwine with each other in some way. There all humorous and extremely delightful. The way she brings her characters to life make any reader a fanatic.

    Entertainment at its best

    Yet another book of short stories, 5 to be exact, that all pick up on characters from MaryJanice stories. These are all side stories from small characters that may have come up once, but the stories are a quick read and are very fun. There is a lot of passion and romance in each of the stories. There are even new types of characters, a fairy. All in all, the entire short stories can stand by themselves or be read after you read the Queen Betsy series. Wonderfully entertaining.

    To be expected from MaryJanice.

    Dead and Loving it is deffinatly one of my favorite books. Like said before, the stories are similar, but I fell head over heels for the characters. Richard and Jane are my favorite, and Garett and Antonia my least favorite, but combined this book makes a great read if read one story at a time and not all in a single dosage. I would reccomend this to any of my friends and family interested in paranormal romance laced with howls, bites, and an extreme amount of laughter.

    Great Book!!!!!

    I've read all of MJD's books and love every single one of them. It supernatural and funny. I've read the book 3 times and always laugh my head off.

    First off let me say that I'm a huge, HUGEEEE!! Betsy Taylor fan. I've read every book in the series except undead and uneasy, (I just borrowed it from the library today) so I knew that I was in for some good reading. I wasn't disappointed. Although, Monster love did disturb me, because of the abduction and rape of Janet. Other than that, I really liked the other stories.

    Really Cute!

    The short stories were cute. I really liked them. But what I reallt liked was finding out what was going on in Undead and Unpopular. The short story in here cleared that right on up.

    The Problem Is...

    That two of the stories have relationships that begin as 'rape'. I never could get past that, it really bothered me. Even if the women were into it, it was written so that the woman kept saying no but the man did what he wanted. Very disappointing. The final story was great though. I wish that it had been a book on it's own. So go to the library and take it out, read the last story and take it back then you won't feel like you wasted your money. Everything else that I've read of hers was great though and I just ordered yet another book. I'm going to pretend that this one never happened. Ah, denial...

    Disgusting

    Nothing in this book was romantic. Nothing is romantic about a woman being forced against her to stay in a room with a man and then then be forced to partake in activitys. And then the woman falls for her attacker. That is not only disgusting its stupid. No woman is going to love a man who forces her to do anything against her will. And the author of this book should have more respect for women considering she is one. Any intelligent woman who has half a brain or more will see this book does nothing but degrade women, and make us seem like toys for men. In todays world woman should be empowering each other not writing about a woman whose rights have been violated. This book is a waste of paper and money. And if any thought was put into in this book, then that was wasted to.

    A Very Fun Read

    I had a great time reading MaryJanice Davidson's 'Dead and Loving It'. Although it seems like they were too short(I kept muttering 'That's IT?' when the stories were done), but they were cute thumbnail sketches of the wacky and fascinating lives of vampires, werewolves and fairies...more fairy stories, MaryJanice! I loved the intersection of the Wyndham wolves with Queen Betsy, and it cracked me up to see the disbeleif that they could have in not recognizing otherworlders as real.
