SKYE'S THE LIMIT IN THIS SPOOKY PAGE TURNER

I¿ve read almost all of the books in Roeder¿s GAY YOUTH CHRONICLES, and this novel is one of the best. Roeder has several different threads in the series. One of his books begins in the 50¿s, while others are set in the 80¿s the 90¿s and the early 21st century. Many recurring characters appear at different ages along the way, and several of the novels have supernatural themes. DEAD HET BOYS is one of these. Roeder¿s books are mostly set in or near the small town of Verona Indiana and this one is no exception. The year is 1998 and Verona¿s small population of gay boys is just starting to get over a string of gay bashing murders that occurred in previous novels. With a little ghostly assistance, the murders were exposed and either arrested, killed or driven from the community. But just as Sean, Nick, Skye, and their straight friend Marshall, the stories primary characters, are beginning to breathe easy, four of the evil homophobes return to Verona, comfortable in the knowledge that no charges against them can be proven. The tables, however, have turned, and now these vicious straight hoodlums are turning up dead, and a new mystery is ignited. The novel also includes a secondary story about trapped souls that serves to strengthen the stories supernatural credibility. Roeder¿s strength lies in his strong character studies. Each chapter is in the voice of one of the main characters, and helps to evoke a real sense of who these boys are. Particularly effective is the development of the character, Skye. This is the second novel in which he¿s starred and it¿s clear that Roeder intends him to be something of a gay super hero, destined to protect his gay brothers and sisters. Skye is a gorgeous self-described alpha male football jock with an over inflated ego and a constantly horny nature, but he is unbelievably kind hearted, with an unexpected wit and charm that make him all but impossible not to love. As I said when I reviewed Roeder¿s MASKED DESTINY, I think Skye is quite possibly Roeder¿s finest creation. DEAD HET BOYS is admittedly a bit on the far-fetched side, but this is good old fashioned story telling at its best, and what well spun yarn doesn¿t go a little over the top from time to time? I highly recommend Mark Roeder¿s GAY YOUTH CHRONICLES, and while I might not suggest you start with this particular book, I don¿t think you¿ll be disappointed if you do.

    Mark Roeder does it again

DEAD HET BOYS is another winner by mark roeder. mark is the author of 15 previous books in the GAYY YOUTH CHRONICLES about the adventures of gay teens in four different time periods, the early 50's early 80's, mid 90's and today set mostly in the ficitional town of verona indiana. one of the best series of books I have ever read. If you have never read any of mark's books I would recommend you start at the beginning although DEAD HET BOYS can be read by itself. In my opinion you can't go wrong by reading any of mark roeder's books especially if you are a gay or questioning teen or have friends who may be. even if you are older you will enjoy the series.
