Gr 7 Up

In this follow-up to Dead Is the New Black (2008) and Dead Is a State of Mind (2009, both Harcourt), Daisy Giordano and her sisters have just returned to Nightshade from Italy, leaving their mother behind to work on a mysterious case. All three girls have secured summer jobs. Daisy works the early-morning shift at Slim's, Poppy puts in her time at the Snack Shack, and Rose tediously toils for Dr. Franken at a research lab. The psychic siblings quickly find themselves in the middle of a multi-front mystery between a young and dangerous pack of Werewolves running loose on the streets at night and an invasion of some sweet-toothed doppelgangers whose mission is to wreak havoc and destroy the reputations of the citizens of Nightshade. To complicate things, Daisy's dad has returned to town, and the teens are left on their own to determine if he's the real deal or a "DoppelDad." Perez's latest tale does not disappoint as her upbeat writing consistently rings true throughout. While every plot thread isn't neatly tied up, readers are left with the impression that Nightshade is full of intrigue. Point reluctant readers who devour this title to other quick, supernatural reads like Brian James's Zombie Blondes (Feiwel & Friends, 2008) or Rachel Caine's "Morganville Vampires" series (Signet).-Adrienne L. Strock, Maricopa County Library District, AZ

Reviewed by Karin Librarian for TeensReadToo.com

The Giodano sisters are back from a summer vacation in Italy, and things in Nightshade are as strange as ever when they get back.

The first thing Daisy wants to do when she gets home is see her boyfriend, Ryan. She has missed him and can't wait to get over to his house. Daisy is disappointed to find out that he is at football practice, but heads over to the school anyway. She is very surprised by what she sees. Ryan has really buffed up in the weeks she's been gone and so, it seems, have most of the other football players.

Since there are still several weeks left in summer, Daisy decides she should get a job. She notices that Slim's has a "Help Wanted" sign in the window, and with her love of cooking, she feels this would be a perfect fit.

After leaving work one evening, she notices someone digging in the dumpster in the alley. Strangely, it appears to be her missing father. After other strange appearances in town, the Nightshade City Council comes to the conclusion that Doppelgangers are on the loose, causing havoc in town.

Daisy and her sisters have to figure out what is going on. Is there something strange causing the football team to get super-strong in such a short time? Who is creating the Doppelgangers? Is Mr. Giodano really back or is he a Doppelganger, too?

DEAD IS SO LAST YEAR is a fun conclusion to a cute trilogy. Marlene Perez has a knack for writing with user-friendly, non-intimidating language. The only drawback is you definitely need to read the trilogy in order. So, readers, take heed - read DEAD IS THE NEW BLACK, then DEAD IS A STATE OF MIND, and finally DEAD IS SO LAST YEAR.

This is a great, light-hearted and fast-paced YA series of books

This is a great, light-hearted and fast-paced YA series of books! It is a YA book so you have young dating drama which appeals to that audience. The quirky, enjoyable blend of paranormal, romance, mystery, and light-hearted life experiences is engaging. The main character, Daisy is likable, sassy, and relate-able. I think the characters are well developed and likable.

    Pinks review

Dead is so last year is when the series starts to mature in the dead is series and if you have a reason to stop reading, dont. Wait to read the third book. It might change your opinion of the series. I really enjoyed reading it and i feel like the older daisey is, the better the books get. I recommend this series to those that love the supernatural world. If you want to contact me, you know what to do. Thankyou for reading my review:)

    BEST BOOK EVER!

Have you ever wanted to clone something or someone? If you have then you should read the book, Dead Is So Last Year, by Marlene Perez.
This book is about a girl named Daisy, her mom, her grandmaw, and 2 sisters, Rose and Poppy. They go to Italy for 2 weeks on a vacation. When it's time for them to come back home, Daisy's mom can't come back with them because she is working on a case. When they get back to Nightshade, Daisy goes to visit her boyfriend, Ryan, at football practice. When the football players get finished, Daisy and Ryan go to Slim's Diner. Daisy also gets a job there. The big problem Daisy faces is that her dad is back in town, after leaving her 6 years ago. When he comes back she is not sure if it's her dad or not. The reason for that is because someone is making clones of everyone, that can take over their doubles life and ruin it. She is afraid that her dad is one of the clones. Is he a clone? If he is a clone will she find her real dad? If you want to know the answers to these questions then you have to read the book.
My favorite part is when Daisy meets Slim. This is my favorite part because Slim is invisible and Daisy doesn't know he's there.
I would recommend this book to girls ages 11-15 who like to read science fiction.
