We pride ourselves in living in a modern society with enlighten approaches to the possibilities of success. However, our society has yet found a means to deal with those that decide to live on the edges of the law. Capital punishment for many is black in white, you kill, you should be killed. However, there are both side of every argument and in Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States by Helen Prejean, the author puts a face on those criminals on death row. Prejean befriends these killer as her role as a spiritual adviser. What she discovers is that they are all too human. Yes, the committed the crimes but more archaic reasons have resulted in their place in line for the electric charge be it social economic status, drug use, or simply a hard life. Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States by Helen Prejean is a fascinating read as she takes you behind the iron gates and into the minds of the accused. In the end Prejean becomes an advocate for life and against capital punishment. She simply extends her hand to these lost souls and gives her readers an opportunity to understand the other side.
