Overview

DEAD OF WINTER is the second novella in the Kate Jones Thriller Series.

Kate Jones is hiding out from her shady past in small town Alaska when she witnesses an execution-style murder. Convinced the killers are Salazar's men and desperate to stop them from finding her, she reports the crime to local law enforcement, hoping to put them off her trail so she can escape.

What she gets is Sam, an enigmatic officer with a mysterious past who's been assigned to watch over her as the hunt for the murderers deepens.

Sam and Kate's obvious attraction to each other becomes a dangerous complication as Kate realizes the only way she'll be able to stay alive is to leave Alaska, and try to keep one step ahead of Salazar.

Meet the Author

DV Berkom is a slave to the voices in her head. As the author of two bestselling thriller series (Leine Basso and Kate Jones), her love of creating resilient, kick-*ss female characters stems from a lifelong addiction to reading spy novels, mysteries, and thrillers, and longing to find the female equivalent within those pages.

Raised in the Midwest, she received her BA in political science from the University of Minnesota and promptly moved to Mexico to live on a sailboat. Many, many cross-country moves (and several years) later, she now lives just outside of Seattle, Washington with the love of her life, Mark, an ex-chef-turned contractor, and writes every chance she gets.

    Dead of Winter

If you want a novel that doesnt have alot of intro. Just digs deep into the crime right away. I recommend this novel. Within the first chapter action starts occuring.

    Forever on the run

If you've been following the exploits of Kate Jones, you know she's on the run from Roberto Salazar, her ex-boyfriend and Mexican drug lord. Salazar isn't a man to forgive and forget, especially since she didn't just leave him, she left with a sack of his cash. Dead of Winter finds Kate in Alaska, where she's found a job and safety from Salazar, she thinks. That hope ends as the pursuing Salazar discovers her whereabouts. His men leave a trail of death behind them as they zone in on her. Sam is the local deputy assigned to protect her until she can escape from Alaska. Sam is both good for her and good to her. They have what could've been a wonderful love affair. But in her heart, she knows she has to keep him relegated as a lovely fling. But a big part of her wishes circumstances were different because he could've been so much more to her. For now, she has to keep running.

    more from this reviewer

    It Leaves You Wanting More!

The continuation of the Kate Jones Adventure Series in Dead of Winter was just as good, if not better, than the first five. Ms. Berkom captures the readers attention from the beginning and maintains that captivating tension throughout the entire story. Kate is a brave and self-reliant person, but life on the run can be lonely. She has made it a point never to get too close to anyone, until she meets Sam. Ms. Berkom's characterization of Sam is perfect and I found myself as taken by his character as Kate was. The imagery in Dead of Winter was amazing with the location being in Alaska and the research I'm certain Ms. Berkom put into this book was extensive. She described the trees, shrubbery, and details of Kate's surroundings in this beautiful, though harsh territory, with such detail and vividness that I could almost smell the surroundings. What is in store for Kate next, as she continues her life on the run looking over her shoulder in hopes that she can see death coming and avoid it at all costs. I look forward to the next instalment of these wonderful stories from Ms. Berkom.
