Sometimes the Dead Can't Be Silenced.

Violet thought she had made peace with her unique ability to sense the echoes of the dead and the imprints that cling to their killers . . . until she acquired an imprint of her own. Forced to carry a reminder of the horrible events of her kidnapping, Violet is more determined than ever to lead a normal life. However, the people who run the special investigative team she works for have no intention of letting her go.

Violet will do whatever it takes to keep her loved ones safe—even if it means lying to her boyfriend, Jay. But when an echo calls to her, she stumbles upon a murder scene unlike anything she's ever witnessed. The murders are frenzied and twisted, and the killer left a disturbing calling card for all to see—a brimstone cross sketched in blood on the wall. And Violet finds herself pulled into a deadly hunt for a vicious madman with an army of devoted followers.

Violet has survived dangerous situations before, but she quickly discovers that protecting those closest to her is far more difficult than protecting herself.

VOYA - Jane Murphy
Violet Ambrose returns in the fourth installment of Kimberly Derting's Body Finder series. Once again, Violet uses her "gift," the ability to locate dead bodies, whether animal or human, and the "echoes" that surround them as well as the "imprints" of their killers. The empathic traits found among the members of her "team"—a collection of similarly abled teens who are aided by a forensic psychologist and Violet's uncle, the town's police chief—set the stage for another compelling suspense tale with entirely believable adolescent characters who work together to prevent and solve crimes. BFFs, love interests, interfering parents all converge to make this story a great read. This volume incorporates the diaries of Violet's grandmother, who also had the ability to locate the dead and belonged to a group known as the Circle of Seven, whose members were all forbears of the circle of Violet's friends. Her therapist is revealed to be a member of the elder group. Childhood friend and now boyfriend Jay Heaton proves to be a loyal and committed partner. The danger of letting her secret out to her best friend complicates matters further. This volume made sense to a reader not familiar with the previous books in the series. The author recaps enough previous material to bring the reader up to speed. The pages turn very rapidly as the drama unfolds. Some of the descriptions are gory, and there are references to sex and drugs, so recommend this book to older teens in high school, and for medium to large public library young adult collections. Gr 9 Up—After being kidnapped and forced to kill her captor in The Last Echo (HarperCollins, 2012), 17-year-old body-finder Violet Ambrose must try to move on despite the murderer imprint now clinging to her. Her friends and boyfriend are there to help her adjust to "normal" life, but soon Violet's psychic abilities lead her to another gruesome discovery—a family of three murdered in their own home. With the killer's trail quickly growing cold, Violet and her team of psychics set out to find and protect a missing fourth family member—a teen about Violet's age. Dead Silence is a fast-paced paranormal thriller that will delight fans of the series as well as readers unfamiliar with it. Told partially through Violet's grandmother's journal entries as well as the killer's point of view, the book delivers a few intense action sequences and plenty of nail-biting suspense. Violet's ability to sense connections between dead bodies and their killers will appeal to teens who love Lisa McMann's "Wake" trilogy (S & S) or Libba Bray's The Diviners (Little, Brown, 2012). The murder discovery scene is quite bloody and may disturb sensitive readers, especially since one of the victims is a young boy. Dead Silence is rumored to be the last in the series; however, a few loose ends remain, as does the potential to continue Violet's story.—Leigh Collazo, Ed Willkie Middle School, Fort Worth, TX

“In spite of providing a tough, likable heroine and a sweet, romantic element, Derting unflinchingly explores the twisted minds of sadistic killers. It’s a combination that keeps her readers clamoring for more.”
