Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Award-winning veteran narrator George Guidall gives a masterful performance of White's latest Doc Ford suspense thriller, creating well-drawn characters, including a grizzled ex-wrestler, two Cuban kidnappers, a teenage boy, a snobby Hamptons millionaire and Ford's hippie colleague. The scenes in which Ford painstakingly pieces together clues and provides backstory tend to drag a bit, but the action sequences are gripping and nail-bitingly suspenseful. Mystery fans are well advised to snatch this one up. A Putnam hardcover (Reviews, Jan. 19). (Mar.)

Kirkus Reviews
Doc Ford, marine biologist-cum-black-ops specialist, must disinter some ugly buried secrets along with a kidnap victim who's been buried alive. Unlucky Will Chaser, 14, wins an essay-writing contest that puts him in the wrong place at the wrong time. His woes begin with a conspiracy in Havana to obtain the newly surfaced "Castro File." Now in U.S. custody, the file is full of inflammable secrets, making it highly attractive to big-time geopolitical extortionists. Chief among these are Hump and Farfel, a pair of bottom feeders who've decided that an effective way to exert pressure on the United States would be to kidnap a certain female senator, put her underground and give the Government 36 hours to come up with the goods. As Will rides in Senator Hayes's limo as part of his contest prize, the ill-intentioned cabal prepares for the snatch. Doc Ford, who just happens to be in New York waiting on his latest spook assignment (Black Widow, 2008, etc.), would be exactly in position to rescue the senator and foil the kidnappers if they didn't decide that young Will qualifies as a workable surrogate. So Doc instantly goes instead into pursuit mode, beginning a frantic chase that will take him to those dark and desperate places that only a man with the Bond-like W designation ("sanctioned by the Executive Branch to use lethal force" worldwide) can handle with aplomb. Doc's 16th suffers from subplot glut, but his fans are inured to that by now.

    Dead Silence

I have read all of the Doc Ford Series. Dead Silence is my favorite so far. I frequent the Heat Islands area, so the characters and locations mean a great deal to me. Mr. White has done a fabulous job, as always.
I had to "meter" my time reading this one, otherwise I would finish too quickly, and have no "Doc" with which to reward myself.

    REview by: FloridaMysteryWriting@blogspot.com

While this may depart a bit from early works, Dead Silence is still superb. The action was so intense the reader is tempted to rush to the end. As a fan of the series, I had to slow down to catch the connections throughout the novel and the entire series. The character development is at a new high. Those who only last a chapter or two still leave a memorable impression. Even the well established main characters had some very interesting development. Doc seems to getting more spiritual and cold-blooded at the same time. I can't wait to see how the conflict resolves itself. Enough of Tomlinson's family history is revealed to leave the reader wanting more. A new series? White has always been bold in his writing and character development. This novel is no different. I would recommend this book and series for anyone.

    I loved it.

The Doc Ford series is one of the best character continuations I have ever read. I live in Naples, Florida, so Sanibel Island is very familiar. Doc Ford plots are always a little offbeat in a good way. The other main characters are all a bit eccentric, also in a good way. This is a must read.

    latest White entry

Classic Doc Ford story, full of unexpected twists and turns, somewhat out of its element as most of the story takes place outside Florida (New York, Long Island, etc).
    Good reading.

    What a disappointment!

I wait for each new publication. This book was not up to the standards of RRW. It had muddled thinking, no continuity, much confusion re: characters and plot.

    READ THEM ALL

The entire series is one of my favorite. This is a realistic character and the descriptions of Florida are always enticing. It is comforting to have a familiar character to come back to but the surprise is how Doc develops throughout the series. Life's happenstances have an effect on us all and Randy Wayne White builds on this in an effective manner. Start with the first one, "Captiva Island" and read your way through. The books are really great beach reads or rainy day indulgences because each chapter lures you in to the next. Even the end of a book only makes you want to rush out and buy the next one so you can continue the journey with Doc and Thomlinson. I am already impatiently waiting for the next release.

Don't know if Randy will like this but he the new John D McDonald

My Dad lives in Florida and he found one of Randy's books by accident. We are both avid readers and just fell in love with the series. As a teenager I read the entire series of Travis McGee by McDonald and to this day read them over and over. I usually give away the books I have read but keep all of Randy's books because I know I will do the same. Hope he thinks being compared to McDonald is a compliment because it is intended that way. I love all of the characters, story lines EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!! Sincerely, Stacey Kranick

    SLOW DEATH

From his weak start to the having enjoyed the development of the Doc Ford Gulf Coast characters and series it was sad to read White's past two attempts to find a means of continuation.
If he can not keep Doc and friends in there established environment, then maybe this painful death will let White's readers rest in peace...

DEAD SILENCE is a fabulous action-packed thriller

Before leaving for New York City, Dr. Marion Ford, a member of a top secret black-ops organization, kills former NFL player Bern Heller, who murdered Doc's friend, was convicted as a serial rapist, but was freed due to a mistrial. Ford goes to the Big Apple to meet former, but maybe still active, British Agent Sir James Montbard, who plans to lead an expedition to the jungles of Central America; Ford wants inclusion to see if Crusaders came there with treasures plundered from the Crusades. As they talk, he notices through a window a kidnapping of Senator Barbara Hayes-Sorento.

Ford reacts going after the kidnapper while Sir James gets the senator to a safe spot. Will, a teen who was in the car with the senator is abducted by two former expert torturers who want a part of the Cuban files. While Castro was alive he had all his treasures and papers on his vacation island. The critical plan was to force the US government to hand over the documents by burying the senator alive, but now adjust with what they indeed for Barbara they will do to Will. Ford accepts the assignment to find Will before it is too late while dodging the Florida cops who suspect him of murdering Heller.

DEAD SILENCE is a fabulous action-packed thriller as Ford is as fascinating as ever especially when he performs what he believes is righteous justice; a belief that is personalized. He feels no remorse when he kills as the people he assassinates deserve their fate and the system fails in meting justice to these miscreants. Will is no saint but a tough guy who even scares the crap out of one of his kidnappers with his ire while they bury him alive. Readers will enjoy this wild out of control Doc Ford thriller.
