"A vast number of horror novels produced today represent genre formula writing at its worst, with shallow characters, predictable plots, and story premises that don't seem very extraordinary, at all. Not so in Dead Soul Mary..." D.Donovan, Senior eBook Review, Midwest Book Reviews

DEAD SOUL MARY represents literary horror at its best, but contains adult themes and is intended for a MATURE READERSHIP ONLY.

If you enjoy reading fully developed stories and characters written in the tradition of great literary horror authors, this is the book you've been looking for.

"The ability to draw the reader into the concept of soul death and still make the story a mystery driven thriller takes talent - a gift MJ Winn so obviously has. He writes with the skill of a poet, imbues his narration with dark humor, creates a plot scenario like a playwright, and all the while keeps his story as fine literature. Talent, incipient notoriety. Read and see". -Literary Aficionado

Editorial Reviews

IndieReader - K.J. Pierce
(5 STARS, Top Book Pick)"...the novel's powerful kick to the "tell it like it is" solar plexus is a big part of what makes the story so formidable. It is a rich, dense novel... The horror lies not in the shock value of jarring scares but in the insidious creep of emotional degradation on a soul-deep level. Winn precisely crafts his characters in such a way that the reader can't help but be emotionally invested in the journey they take, which makes the horror all the more appalling." -IndieReader
Midwest Book Review - D. Donovan
A vast number of horror novels produced today represent genre formula writing at its worst, with shallow characters, predictable plots, and story premises that don't seem very extraordinary. Not so in Dead Soul Mary... Winn takes plenty of time to build up plot and protagonist - and it pays off big time... So it's a real pleasure to find a slowly-building plot where the horror element is tempered by the motivations, influences and history of realistic people just trying to live their lives.

This book is not a typical horror novel. First off, the writing is excellent. Its characters are fully developed and the novel is superbly plotted. The book is smartly written but may not appeal to people looking for a quick, easy read. The stories of the various characters converge in unexpected ways. And then the story becomes very scary. And I do mean VERY scary. For me, the book was especially chilling because the people seemed so real. The way everything ties together is impressive. This book reminded me of the older Stephen King novels. The 5 stars I am giving it are well deserved. I will read more from this author.

Outstanding.  This book is a masterpiece of modern horror.  The writing and character development are exceptional.. The narrative is abundant in psychological insight and quiet undertones of spirituality.  I was tacken aback on more than one occasion. The book has themes that will make you put down your ereader now and again in order to think and reflect. The build up in the beginning is a slow crreepy crawl, but it adds to the overall power of the story.   I believe the lengthy development was done on purpose and for good effect.  When the bad stuff kicks in, the story cannot be put down.   To be honest, I don't think this novel will please everyone.  If you like books with only one heroic main character who you can follow on every page and root for, or if you prefer linear story lines where the predictable movie-like things happen, this novel will not be for you.  This book is not a quick, light read.  If you are in a rush to finish in order to move on to the next book on your reading list, this story may not appeal to you.  This novel was something different and something special.   I was astounded by its depth and quality.   It was a rare treat to read a terrifying story that does not rely on zombies or blood or monsters in order to scare you.  I have been a huge fan of horror novels for many years, and it is a pleasure to find an author who writes books in the way they used to be written long ago - with patience and great care.  I think fans of old style horror and readers who like to get absorbed within a longer story will love this book.  I highly recommend it.

Worth Reading,,,,, It took me awhile to get through it. The book jumped around a bit but that wasn't the problem I had.  I still don't understand why the character Drew, had such a big part in the book.  Other than befriending Megan and believing in her, I really don't think he was even needed in the book to make it interesting.  He was so weak, all the way to the end.

I don't quit know where to start. This was a really intense read. It started rather disjointedly, seemingly scattered. There was a series of characters introduced, and their stories didn't seem to be going anywhere. Even so, the writing was great and intense with shocking moments that left me biting my nails wondering what would hapen next, then BAM -- we were off on another character. So I kept on hoping there would be that moment -- you know, the one where things finally come together. It happens a little over halfway through. At over 600 pages in this book, that does mean it takes a little while, but when it takes, WOW!! The second half of this book moves at a rapid pace. It was a ride of terror I will not forget. I cannot believe this is the author's first full-length book. It was a masterpiece of terror. If you are thinking of picking this up, I only have a few warnings. This is an adult horror story. There are sexual referances. The story line is intense, and this author is pretty graphic with descriptions. To the grammer nazi's -- it is very well edited. Also remember if you give it a chance that this author does an amazing job of pulling some seemingly random events all together in the end. If you are up for a really scary book, I was really impressed with this one. I will definitely be looking for more from this author. -- SPeeD

I got about half way through book and quit reading. The writinng is good but the story is all over the place and I couldn't figure out where the story was going. Also, I hated the main characters , especially Meagan.

I liked the premise of the book but I found it hard to get into and I just didn't care much about the characters. It just wasn't my cup of tea but others might enjoy it.

Brilliant Story! This book was a pleasant surprise.  I had not read anything by M.J. Winn before, but I was lucky to stumble on to this book.  The novel is original and really well written.  The characters  are amazing. I don't want to spoil the plot, so all I'll say is that it it is clever and creepy and keeps you guessing.  Congrats to Mr. Winn!  Can't wait to read your  next book.  Don't keep us waiting too long!

Masterpiece This novel is a masterpiece of modern horror. It takes its time, but it is all worth it. I can't remember the last time I read something this good. I am usually picky with my horror novels...I find a lot of the writers today of this genre all sound pretty much the same. Not Mr. Winn! It is refreshing to find such a writer today that can pen a story that is not only completely original but so well-written. I loved every minute of it. I cannot wait for his next book.

This is the one of the best "horror" novels I've had the great good fortune to read. Winn is one of the few authors to meticulously  develop his characters. So many authors - even popular ones - skip character development. The characters are believable. What goes on in their heads is believable.  You feel for the "villain," you really do. You understand how he got where he is. He's scary because he's removed from what he does. And his most heinous crime is his "Judas Kiss," which sounds implausible, but is terrifying. The "good guys" in the book, including protagonist, Megan Bauer, are human, not saints (as Dean Koontz often portrays the good guys). This book is more of a psychological thriller than a "blood and guts" tale. It's more Alfred Hitchcock than Stephen King. The collective nightmares are terrifying. We've all had dreams where we feel trapped and scared. The author successfully exploits that fear. This book isn't for someone who wants a quick thrill. You invest quite a lot of thought and time in reading this book.  To me, it is well worth it. One of the best books ever.

This is a good one.  A really good one.  At over 600 pages, this book is reminiscent of some of King's heftier tomes. but the deep characterizations are necessary to understand the actions of the protagonists.  The plot keeps moving quickly and unexpectedly  This is a story of the jopurneys of two totally oposite persons.  A story of redemption of the soul Give it time to develop and you will not be disappointed.

This was a tough one for me to finish. I kept reading mainly because I hate quiting a book. The story moved from one veiw point to the next without any warning. I had often read a page or two before I realized the first- person narriator had changed to someone else. And most of the people were very hard to relate too. Almost everyone in the book are pure evil. It takes you to the very dark inner- workings of these minds. Left me feeling bogged down and depressed. And even after reading the end of the book, I still don't like or care for Magen. I can't forgive her for all the bad thoughts and actions she took part in throughout the story. I like the idea behind this story line, and think I would have enjoyed it much more had there been at least a few people with kind hearts and not all mentally insane. Not my style I guess.

Too descriptive. Do we really need to know what the cabbie looked like or all of the characters inner thoughts. Somewhere around the middle of the book.l didn'nt care any more happened to meghan!

Excellent read! This story really kept me hooked. I couldn't put it down for three days. Not only is it suspenseful and scary, but I found a lot of humor in it as well. I loved the characters and I hope to see them return in future stories. Definitely try this book.

This novel was something different. It was a strange but brilliant story. And it's very scary. Don't read it while alone in the house like I did. I couldn't sleep for two days. Best I've read in a long time.
