About the Author

About The Author
Born on April 1, 1809, in Sorochyntsi, within the Russian Empire, Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol was a Russian novelist, short story writer, and playwright of Ukrainian origin. His early life in Ukraine deeply influenced his literary works, infusing them with rich cultural and folkloric elements. Gogol's father, Vasily Gogol-Yanovsky, was a descendant of Ukrainian Cossacks and belonged to the petty gentry. In the 1830s, Gogol moved to Saint Petersburg, where he became an integral part of the literary scene. His early works, such as Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka, were influenced by his Ukrainian upbringing, Ukrainian culture, and folklore. These stories, and others such as Diary of a Madman, have also been noted for their proto-surrealist qualities. Gogol's later works, including The Government Inspector and Dead Souls, satirized political corruption in contemporary Russia. Despite his success, Gogol's life was marked by personal struggles and a quest for spiritual fulfillment. He died on February 21, 1852, in Moscow, leaving behind a legacy that would influence Russian literature for generations.
