Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Donna L. Phillips
Dipping into superstition, mythology, unsolved crimes, true science, and not-so-true frauds, Dead Strange is sure to satisfy teens’ appetite for the gruesome, weird, or wicked. The fifty two- to three-page entries in this entertaining and informative compendium will challenge even the well-read to learn about new mysteries, like the ogopogo, a Canadian cousin to the Loch Ness monster. Even on familiar topics, such as dowsing, readers are told about a million-dollar prize for the first dowser who can consistently achieve an 80 percent success rate. Originally published in Great Britain in 2003, Dead Strange has been updated through 2011 in this U.S. edition. The “Big Bang” entry notes the December 2011 status of efforts to confirm the existence of the Higgs boson particle. (Invite teens to check the Web to learn this was accomplished in early July 2012.) Dead Strange encourages readers to keep an open mind about these mysteries, tempered with a healthy dose of skepticism. Its conversational tone and cheeky humor (“Bigfoot never was a fan of pants.”) will entertain teens who want reading to be fun. With teens, you can never have too many books like this. Only two things would improve it for librarians: a list of photo credits/sources and a hardcover edition. Buy extras. It is sure to wear out quickly or disappear quicker than a zombie snapped up in an alien abduction. Ages 11 to 18.
