Overview

The third in the brand new series of Sally Reardon Supernatural mysteries, written by bestselling novelist Steven Savile and his award-winning co-writer Steve Lockley.

The city remembers, even if the people forget, and its high stone walls and strips of wasteland scattered throughout the urban renewal have a long, long memories. Sally Reardon, on doctor's orders, is spending a little time away from it all visiting her sister in the Big City, but it's anything but restful thanks to a chance encounter over too-expensive coffee in a trendy café. Sally finds herself swept up into a gristly medical scandal. The ensuing investigation spans seventy years and takes her into one of the darkest times of London's past, a time steeped in personal tragedy, both for Londoners and now for Sally.

FROM THE AUTHORS

The Sally Reardon Supernatural Mysteries are intended to be a series experience with new installments coming out fairly regularly, each one hopefully developing and adding on from the ideas in the one before. We thought it'd be fun to build a series in the same way we would a TV show with linked but separate stories that come together to feed a bigger overall series arc.

In keeping with that we made a conscious decision to make them something you could read in a single sitting, just like one of those TV shows you'd sit and watch in a 45 minute block. These aren't novels, they're novelettes, which means they run around 12,000-15,000 words, or about 30 minutes reading at the speed we read. Deadlines is a little different, at 25,000 words it runs almost 100 pages and is more like a Double-Feature.

We set out to write something fans of shows we enjoyed, things like Medium and Afterlife, would enjoy, with the emphasis on the supernatural but very deliberately away from anything horrific.

    Spellbinding tale of suspense

Deadlines is the third in the increasingly thrilling and chilling series of Sally Reardon Mysteries.
Here - the problems and mystery follow our psychically gifted cop on a break to the Capital, and Sally finds herself thrown head first into a distressing and emotional trauma from the distant past, meeting lost souls both living and dead. In a cleverly constructed tale that draws on the fears of the Victorians, the horrors of WWII and today's very real conflict between cost and care, Sally must also reconcile feelings about her own pregnancy as she searches for the truth behind the mystery.

With a dose of wry humour to offset the mounting tension, some new and interesting characters, and a wonderfully eerie scene of past events, the two Steves have once again succeeded in bettering the previous Sally Reardon mystery (the excellent Missing) - and with more in the series to come, I can hardly wait to follow her next chilling adventure. Longer than the previous two Mysteries, Deadlines is a satisfying tale that can be polished off in a single sitting - best read on a dark and windy night!
