Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carlee Hallman
The simple text, spectacular photographs with labels, and inserts of information in this book give the reader facts in a painless manner. The text begins: "Most spiders are not harmful to people. The black widow, however, can kill a person. It is the most dangerous spider in the United States." Spiders have two main body parts. The back part of a female black widow has a red hourglass on the bottom. With spinnerets the black widow spins a messy web that looks like a cobweb. They eat insects, and they poison their victims through the venom in their fangs. The female lays eggs and protects them with an egg sac made out of silk. As the spiderlings grow, the molt, which is a process of shedding their hard coating called an exoskeleton. A special page informs the reader about the difference between vertebrates and invertebrates. In addition, there is a glossary with pictures, index, and lists for further information. The colorful larger than life pictures and simple text will attract and hold the attention of "emergent readers." This book is part of the "No Backbone! The World of Invertebrates" series.
