Some things are not always what they appear to be . . . So Nick Fallon discovers when he is hired to investigate the death of a young man whose body is found buried in a wooded canyon area of Los Angeles. Not that he's surprised. After ten years in law enforcement, Nick is pretty much used to the unexpected. However, he soon becomes frustrated by the bizarre behavior of his client John Hammond, and the apparent indiscretion of his business partner, Jeff Stevens.
Nick's investigation leads him to a gay bar in LA, and from there to the still recovering city of New Orleans where he finds what appear to be the answers to the mystery. But what he has unraveled is only a small part of the truth. What remains is even more terrible-a trap-where the price of pleasure is death.
Along the way, Nick is reminded of the often-high cost of friendship, and that trust and honesty are essential elements in any relationship-be it friend, or lover.

I am in love with Nick...gosh, if only he was real and I gay - be still my heart. Nick Fallon is a former NYPD detective who left the force to become a private investigator in California. He is deeply in love with his partner, Eric (what a great match for him) and has great friends as developed in the Portrait series by the same author. The man has an offbeat sense of humor with no sense of shame in getting what he wants...a definite smart alec, which is always a plus for me when it comes to handsome edgy detectives. The story is somewhat uncomfortable when it introduces murder via snuff films, but that is only one element to the plot and not the entire premise. I also found myself very anxious for his business partner, Jeff Stevens and his lover Peter Brandon when they hit a rough patch in their relationship (read Portrait series for their story) and audibly gasping at one point when things looked dodgy. I think that is what I have found myself enjoying with the Portrait series and now the Nick Fallon series...lots of different threads interwoven to make an entertaining fast-paced mystery with a dash of romance to boot. Another plus in this particular story is that even though Nick & Jeff are smart PI's when it comes to solving crimes - things are not always resolved quite as neatly and packaged up conveniently as some mystery/thrillers, which makes it a little more interesting and less predictable. Also, the interplay between Jeff and Nick and their lovers and friends will keep me looking for more installments as well.
I cannot put this series down. It's full of perfectly imperfect characters, hot sex and intriguing stories. Just love it! J.P. Bowie has become one of my "must read" authors!!
