Overview

High school juniors Camelia and Ben have discovered a powerful bond: they both possess the power of psychometry, the ability to see the future through touch. For Ben, the gift is a frightening liability. When he senses a strong threat or betrayal, he risks losing control. Camelia's gift is more mysterious. When she works with clay, her hands sculpt messages her mind doesn't yet comprehend.

Before either one has a chance to fully grasp their abilities, a new danger surfaces, but this time, Camelia is not the target. Adam, a familiar face from Ben's past, is drawn into a puzzle he can't solve...and his life is on the line. As the clues pile up, Camelia must decide whether to help him and risk losing Ben or do nothing and suffer the consequences. But in these games, who can be trusted?

The stakes only get higher in Deadly Little Games, the thrilling third Touch novel by Laurie Faria Stolarz.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 8–11—Another elaborate setup, another love triangle, another intense but chaste teen relationship—this series desperately needs something to make it stand out in the crowd of paranormal romances, but this installment isn't it. After the events of Deadly Little Lies (Hyperion, 2009), Camelia is happily dating Ben, but her thoughts wander back to Adam despite their messy history. Then she begins channeling menacing messages such as "you deserve to die." Ben has a "psychometric" ability to sense thoughts through touch, and he knows that his girlfriend is hiding something—namely her increasing concern that Adam is the target of these messages. Camelia claims she just wants to protect Adam from an apparent stalker, who ramps things up by scrawling threats on his door and mailing clues to a malicious crossword puzzle. Meanwhile, Camelia's Aunt Alexia is in a mental institution, and the teen believes that what seems like mental illness may actually be a form of psychometry. Chapters alternate with transcripts of therapy sessions between a doctor and an anonymous patient, which builds some tension in the lead-up to the revelation of the stalker's identity. Though Stolarz briefly recaps the events of the first two books, the chain of events may confuse readers who are new to the series. Psychometry is a beguiling premise, but with its lack of real tension or emotional resonance, this novel is essentially Twi-Lite—right down to the supernatural hottie sneaking in through Camelia's bedroom window. Recommend Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver instead (Scholastic, 2009).—Amy Pickett, Ridley High School, Folsom, PA
Children's Literature
Camilia is a junior in high school who has been through the trauma of being stalked and nearly killed and yet survived with a pretty good outlook. Camilia also possesses the power of psychometry, the ability to see future events through touch. Her boyfriend Ben, once wrongly accused of killing his former girlfriend, possesses the same power. Camilia's insights come to her in pieces, snippets of a scene, words or phrases in her head. She is also an artist who sculpts clay. Often she closes her eyes and lets the sculpting just happen...and this is when her power takes over. The book opens in art class with Camilia sculpting her ex-boyfriends lips as the words "you deserve to die" burst from her own lips. She can't stop thinking about Adam (her ex) which Ben senses and thus begins to pull away. Camilia continues to get clues that warn her that someone close to her is in danger. The mystery unravels and Camilia is given more clues through sculpting, one of which is a crossword puzzle. Soon Adam begins receiving threats in the form of daily crossword puzzles. Stolarz has done a great job at surprising twists. Throughout the book there is always more than one possible suspect. The crossword puzzle is also interactive for the reader. Every few chapters there is a three page transcription of dialogue between a "doctor" and "patient." This is followed by the crossword puzzle. It's an interesting addition to the novel, especially as literature becomes more and more interactive. Also, it is always nice to have a strong female protagonist, though at times I found it difficult to believe that she would not call for help under the circumstances. The supporting cast of characters is also interesting and diverse, each with their own set of troubles that balance out the game of murder and jealousy. The novel is well written, full of tension. I would definitely be compelled to read more in the "Touch" series. Reviewer: Stephanie R. Pearmain

MUST READ! Best in the series!

It just keeps getting better and better! This book was soooo good. It surpassed all of my expectations. Lots of action and suspense with equal amount of romance. I did not want this story to end and now I am left waiting and anticipating the next in the series. A must read!

    Truly Different YA Paranormal

I read this book awhile ago, not realizing that I hadn't written a review on it until now, so I went back and took another look at the book. The Touch books are a great young adult paranormal mystery series. There is more here than just a romance and the paranormal isn't overrunning the story or overshadowing the characters - it is part of their being, so nothing ever feels forced or tired.

Deadly Little Games is the third book in the series and the mysteries don't let up. While there is a little less excitement in this installment (I think that is only because it isn't Camelia who is in direct danger the entire time), it still moves with a quick pace. Ben and Camelia's power of psychometry is different from all of the immortal, vampire, werewolves type of paranormal, so for those looking for something completely different from the majority of the reads out there - this is a great choice. Faria also has a series called Blue is for Nightmares, which also falls along the line of being different from the usual paranormal. I can't wait for Deadly Little Voices (A Touch Novel), the fourth in the Touch series, which will be out December 6, 2011.

    This book is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love the mysterious and suspenseful nature of it. Laurie Faria Stolarz puts a lot of thought and detail into this. Who doesn't love teens with Psychometry.
