Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Denise Daley
This amazing insect is called a praying mantis because when it is hunting it holds its front legs together as if it is praying. Do not let the title of this book fool you, though. The praying mantis is not deadly—or even dangerous—to people. Just to insects. It eats grasshoppers, caterpillars, flies, butterflies, and even other praying mantises. This book briefly describes how the praying mantis catches its prey, as well as how it lays eggs and grows. The bright and glossy photographs show the praying mantis up close as it goes through the stages of its life cycle. This book wonderfully introduces young readers to terms such as egg case, nymphs, exoskeletons, and molting. Easy explanations for each of these terms are given, and large, detailed photographs support the simple text. This book includes a glossary, an index, and a list of several additional print and online sources for further information. Part of the "No Backbone! The World of Invertebrates" series.
