Zappia
My curiosity got the better of me recently when I caught gorgeous, flame-haired local author Sylvia Nobel discussing her novel Deadly Sanctuary on a local news program. I had to consider the title for an upcoming presentation on mysteries and thrillers set in the American Southwest! I picked it up immediately at Barnes & Noble and don't regret it. This savvy blend of mystery and romance stars Kendall O'Dell, a Philadelphia journalist relocating to the Arizona desert on the outside chance that her asthma will improve. She has a position lined up with a small town newspaper in fictional Castle Valley, reminiscent of Wickenburg, or perhaps Casa Grande. Kendall finds herself rescued, not once, but several times by attractive fellow reporter/rancher Bradley Talverson when she gets into scrapes. Her first assignment at the paper: investigate the suspicious disappearance of her predecessor at the paper, a man who vanished while working on a story concerning the unsolved deaths of two teenage girls. Nobel is an intelligent, witty author who has found her element: the thriller set in the Southwest with a dash of romance sprinkled in like cinnamon! Nobel's whodunit is in the vein of Agatha Christie or Jessica Fletcher of 'Murder She Wrote' fame. I got hooked... that's what a good mystery should be. --Sonoran News

    meh

The cowboy slang got on my nerves after a while. The whole "small town" and "city girl" Cliché was a bit much as well.
Also y'all stands for you all... as in more then one person...

Let me explain: Y'all come back now means you all make sure to visit again! This makes sense..
Will you finish this carrot stick? can NOT be translated with Y'all gonna finish this carrot stick? Southerners would wonder just how many people are sharing this carrot stick?

I think if you are into this sort of "setting" you would really enjoy this book tho. So don't go by me.
Thankfully it was free, so I did not have to regret the money spent.

    From Texas?? DON'T READ THIS

So by page 57 the only thing I want to do is ask the author one question ARE YOU TRYING TO PISS WOMEN FROM TEXAS OFF? Seriously, the supporting character who is from Texas is not endearing, but annoying. Your Texas jargon is totally outdated and more the stuff of what non-southern people preceive Texas people to be like, not how they actually are. Very dissappointed.

An okay read but glad it was free.

I don't usually read this type of book, but since it was free... Anyway, don't think it's too much to ask that southern dialect be used correctly. Y'all stands for you all and is never singular. Pet peeve, sorry! Otherwise, not bad at all, y'all!

    Great Read!

Deadly Sanctuary has good character and plot development, and the story moves at a great pace. Nice fluid style that holds a reader¿s interest. I found myself caring for the characters. My favorite was Ginger. I love the way Ms. Nobel made a smalltown gossip endearing instead of just another nuisance. Sylvia Nobel spins a good tale, so I¿ll be reading the entire series.

If you like mystery w/a touch of romance go for it!

I met Ms. Nobel at a book signing and bought both books right away. I read this one in just a couple evenings, it's a very fast read! I guess if I were to complain about anything (as a native Arizonan) it would be some of the dialog seems somewhat stereotypical of what people back east think we sound like. Other than that I think this book was a wonderful first step into her new series.

    Very Intense Read!

Don't start the book before bed, unless of course you can sleep in in the morning. It is an intense page turner and fast read. Ms. Nobel is very eloquent in her prose and in her descriptions of Arizona. It is an excellent whodunit!

    great plot, profanity wasn't necessary

The book had a great plot, yet the book didn't need the profanity in it.

Can't wait for the fourth installment

I discovered Sylvia's books when she was signing at a book fair. I mainly purchased the book because she was a local author. I quickly read through that one and the two that followed. I have bought many many copies of all three books and given them as gifts to friends and family in other states. I keep checking for her fourth book to be published! I am waiting patiently because I know she is working on the screenplay.

    A good read

I didn't have to waste my time skimming through the sex scenes even though I do'tt mind the occasion dropping of the f-bomb. I enjoyed this book and wouldn't have to worry about loaning it to my mother! LOL! Nice easy read.

    Good but not spectacular

This is a new author for me and I will probably not buy another of her books. The characters seem take a long time to develop and the pacing was slow for me. Several times I waited for the "obvious" dialog or sequential next step - and it did not happen. Yes - it was a good read but not deep enough for what I like.

    awesome page turner

One of the absolute best books I have ever read... and I read alot! I met the author at one of her book signings and bought Deadly Sanctuary. She dared me to start reading it that night and guaranteed I'd be back the next day to buy the rest in the series. She was right. I was back the following day & bought all of them including Chasing Rayna. This book was funny, witty, suspenseful and romantic all at once. Bravo Sylvia Nobel. I'm hooked.

    Highly Recommended

This is a great book. Never boring. The story line flows well. Although I had it pretty much figured out, the end still had a few surprises. The book was free and sounded interesting, so I decided to download it. I liked it so much that I will look for #2 of the Kendall O'Dell series by Ms Sylvia Nobel.

    Solid mystery

Solid but predictable mystery. It is a quick read. The ending is rushed and could have been better developed.
