"A fast-moving thriller packed with action and intrigue."
-Scott Nicholson, best-selling author of Liquid Fear

"A gutsy debut. This is international intrigue in the hands of an expert. With his breathless pacing and punchy prose, McDermott knots a complicated plot so real it might as well be breaking news. Deadly Straits ravages like a category-five hurricane: unpredictable, merciless, and fierce."
-L.C. Fiore, award-winning author of Green Gospel

Synopsis:

Consultant and very part-time spook Tom Dugan is a happy man until his CIA handler comes calling. With a hijacking investigation pointing to his long-time client and best friend, London ship owner Alex Kairouz, Dugan is guilty by association and forced to go under cover in Alex's company to clear his own name.

In attempting to prove Alex's innocence along with his own, Dugan manages to implicate them both more deeply, and when one of Alex's tankers is found adrift near Singapore with a dead crew, and another explodes in port, Dugan is framed for the attacks.

When Alex is hospitalized, in critical condition after a suspicious suicide attempt, Dugan finds himself almost out of options. Convinced the attacks are prelude to an even more devastating assault, Dugan follows his last remaining lead to Russia, to be shanghaied as an 'advisor' to a Russian Spetsnaz unit and find himself sailing into Deadly Straits.

I didn't like the way the book started, but once it got going it was great! The characters were interesting and the plot developments just kept on coming! I hope R.E. McDermott continues writing books like this one! Definitely recommended if you like thrillers.

An exceptional read. It has a plot that grips you right from the start and doesn't let go until you're finished. The equivalent to any Tom Clancy novel.

This is truly an excellent book. I thoroughly enjoyed. Once I started reading it I could not put it down.

Mr. McDermott writes in the tradition of the greats. The plot is appropriately complex, grounded in fact and world events. Although a maritime adventure, he does not overwhelm the non-sailors. His characters are well developed, believable and engaging. His next book will go to the head of my must read list!

I fully enjoyed the characters and the pace of this book, as well as gaining some insights into the workings of the large merchant ships in use today. I would recommend Deadly Straits to anyone who enjoys action adventure.

Whenever we take a long road trip, my husband and I like to enjoy a novel together. (He drives; I read out loud.) Choosing McDermott's book "Deadly Straits" was a real winner, as it kept us both spellbound throughout the story. McDermott is very talented at spinning a good yarn and at sketching in his characters so that the reader becomes very involved with them. It's obvious that he does his homework, as he included enough details to make his story very realistic. We loved it and would recommend it highly.

I generally don't leave reviews, but felt compelled to do so in hopes of encouraging others to read this book, plus it appeared to not have any recent reviews. The book starts out a bit slow, but soon builds momentum, and I urge you to keep reading. I found some of the scenes hard to follow, as I'm not familiar with ship terminology, but the suspense and overall context of said scenes are easily grasped. This book is excellently edited! For me, that is high praise since I loathe misspelled words, missing commas, and misplaced commas. :) The protagonists are likable characters who are wonderfully developed; you feel as though you know whom they are and what they stand for and represent. The antagonist are thoroughly detestable, easily abhorred. One of the things I love about this book is how everything is wrapped up, even things I forgot about. There is closure concerning what happened "after the fact." (Hope that makes sense.) I'm looking forward to reading this author's other books and learning more about the characters I've come to "know."

Never expected such a great read from a free book. The characters are great. The storyline is sit on the edge of your seat and the ending leaves you feeling like justice has been gotten. Highly recommended !!!!!!

This was a good read. Like all novels of this genre, the exploits of the hero sometimes stretch belief a bit. But that makes it more interesting. I am looking forward to reading more books by this author.

I found I could not put this book down once I started it. It reminded me of the first Alistair Maclean book I read back in the 196 0' s & later reading Tom Clancy's novels. I very much enjoyed the fast pace & character development of the story, especially for a first novel & look forward to reading more from the author.

Excellant story for a first time author. Will read more from him. The story was on par with Cussler and other well established authors. Good job. Highly recommend.

First book I have read from this author and once ALL the players were sorted out, a very good, action packed read. Also enjoyed the FREE offering from the author for book two. I would have ordered it anyway as I enjoyed the first one and will order book three once I have finished the second one. Love finding new authors.
