Synopsis:

Consultant and very part-time spook Tom Dugan is a happy man until his CIA handler comes calling. With a hijacking investigation pointing to his long-time client and best friend, London ship owner Alex Kairouz, Dugan is guilty by association and forced to go under cover in Alex's company to clear his own name.

In attempting to prove Alex's innocence along with his own, Dugan manages to implicate them both more deeply, and when one of Alex's tankers is found adrift near Singapore with a dead crew, and another explodes in port, Dugan is framed for the attacks.

When Alex is hospitalized, in critical condition after a suspicious suicide attempt, Dugan finds himself almost out of options. Convinced the attacks are prelude to an even more devastating assault, Dugan follows his last remaining lead to Russia, to be shanghaied as an 'advisor' to a Russian Spetsnaz unit and find himself sailing into Deadly Straits.

I didn't like the way the book started, but once it got going it was great! The characters were interesting and the plot developments just kept on coming! I hope R.E. McDermott continues writing books like this one! Definitely recommended if you like thrillers.

IF YOU LIKE CLANCY AND WEB GRIFFIN, YOU'LL HAVE A NEW AUTHOR TO FOLLOW!

Mr. McDermott writes in the tradition of the greats. The plot is appropriately complex, grounded in fact and world events. Although a maritime adventure, he does not overwhelm the non-sailors. His characters are well developed, believable and engaging. His next book will go to the head of my must read list!

An exceptional read. It has a plot that grips you right from the start and doesn't let go until you're finished. The equivalent to any Tom Clancy novel.

Exceptionally good story teller, keeps the interest to the last page, and all that happens could really happen. I enjoy Cussler and Clancy and now McDermott. Would recommend this book, and the next book to everyone who enjoys a good story with lots o action.

I love thrillers and this did not disappoint. It was something that kept me up reading just one more chapter and still not willing to put it down. I agree with the reviews and if you like Cussler and Clancy this is well written. I have recommended it to quite a few people who like the thrillers. Hope the next book is just as good.

I couldn't stop reading this author's work! Hard to believe it was his first book -- well researched, and very informative in this day of rampant piracy on the high seas. I am a fan of thrillers and McDermott does a great job with telling his story and developing his characters.

I never thought anything would be on a par with Clive Cussler's books (I own every one of them) but Deadly Straits kept me reading right up to the end. For his first book, I think Mr. McDermott hit a homerun...right out of the ball park! (My favorite snippet was the little girl's needle!) Thanks for all your hard work in writing this excellent novel.

Enjoyable read because it was believable, albeit scary because it could happen. Easier to follow than Clancy and not the "save the world" every week like Cussler, but definitely in the same style to a degree as both.

It did keep my interest throughout. The characters were plausible and the action and plot were elevated to keep your interest but not so over the top as to be a comic book, as Cussler sometimes can be.

Just ordered the second book and starting it tonight.

    Writer knows his stuff

I found "Deadly Straits" to be a gripping read. The plot is believable and the author knows his ships and the people who operate them. I find that is not always the case with some reads of this nature. The plot will keep you on the edge of your seat and difficult to put down.

    Lots of nautical tech info

The storyline was layered pretty deeply, but interesting enough to hold my attention. All of the nautical techhnical terms had me 'lost' a few times, which made staying with it more difficult. Not an easy read, yet I found myself having a hard time putting it down. Very good for a first book and I look forward to future books from this writer.

    Excellent reading

As an ex Royal NZ Navy senior rate (Chief Petty Officer Seaman) and Chief Bosun's Mate I found this extremely excellent reading. Especially in regard to tanker safety and familiarisation, and knowing that the families of all crew, owners and children of employees that participate in this line of work from the time they sail to the time they arrive home are affected. From the time the lines are parted from the time they sail, to the time they are attached again in his home port a man's family is on his mind 24/7. Well done. This is a nautical man's book, past and present, I highly recommend it and look forward to the continuing sagas to follow.

Suspenseful, Exciting & Thrilling!! Don't miss this one!

Just finished Deadly Straits on my Nook. I was apprehensive, but soon
found any apprehension was needless. This was a great read. Very
exciting and action-packed. More than I could have hoped for. I didn't
want to put it down. Action & adventure, espionage and thriller all
rolled into one story. Thanks for the awesome entertainment. I can't wait for your the book from R.E McDermott.

    Highly Recommend

Great reading, and unfortunately something that I can see possibly even taking place. If I had read it before 9/11 had occurred, I probably wouldn't have said that, but since then, I guess I've come to the conclusion that almost anything is possible and since terrorists attacked from the air before, what's to keep them from trying the sea? I enjoy reading thrillers and this one ranks right up there with the best of them.
