Enlightening however a little hard to dive into.

I read this book for a book report in my ASL class. It was a very good choice as far as being exposed to a different lifestyle, and living with a child that has a handicap. I like how it chronicled her life and hard times, but at certain points it because boring and repetitive. I would recommend this as a book as a topic of discussion.

    Excellent, Moving Reality

Growing up with a mother who has been deaf since birth has allowed me to relate to 'Deaf Like Me' in some ways. This book provides a harsh yet moving reality of the different trials and tribulations that the family of a deaf person endures. The way that the family handled the whole situtation with Lynn allows the hearing world to get a small glimpse of the Deaf community. When sign language became an option for the Spradley family, their whole future changed for the better because now they could communicate with their daughter with a language that will always be native to her. I strongly recommend this book to everyone who goes into deaf education or who is currently enrolled in ASL classes.

    A Disapointment

This was a hard read. As much as I respect the parents for their time and energy, I also found it to be derogitory towards the deaf community. The language was harsh, using words like 'retarded' and 'dumb' constantly. I found the bad times were focused on a lot more than the positive times.

A heartfelt account of two parent's sincere and trumphant struggles to reach the vast world locked inside their deaf daughter

This book was awesome. Since I was little I have been fascinated by sign language and those who use it. I want to become a special ed teacher so I can teach kids like Lynn. I was amazed at the incredible amount of patience her parents had when teaching her to speak. I know kids like Lynn who don't talk or hear but ASL is just a different way for them to talk. I know they all have thinks they want to say, they just say them in a different way and that's ok. This book helped me realize that we all speak the same message, we just speak it in different languages because we are all different, and that's ok too!

The book was a good show of the controversey between sign language and lip-reading.

The book gives a good example of the feelings about the the use of sign language ing the 1960's and 70's. The book gives the impression of sign language as the worst thing for the deaf or hard-of-hearing, until the end, where they finally let her learn sign. Lip reading is hard to grasp when you do not know what people are talking about. But sign language gives the hard-of-hearing a chance to talk to express themselves as it is illustrated in the book.

    Deaf Like Me.

Deaf Like Me was an excellent book. I just don't understand why there is any controversy at all over sign language and Lip-reading.
