Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Leis-Newman
The role of blood is what allows the human body to function, whether it is the production of red blood cells or how arteries carry blood rich in oxygen. Additionally, Preston explores how blood protects the body, tackling topics like bleeding and clotting, blood in utero, kidneys and filtering blood, and bone marrow. A large section is devoted to cardiology, such as "A Powerful Pump," "Flowing through the Heart," "A Regular Beat" and "Blood Pressure." The information is medically accurate and presented in a straightforward fashion complemented by large color illustrations. The topics correspond with brief facts about how heart attacks occur, what a doctor is listening for when she listens to a heartbeat, and why a person faints. Preston becomes slightly repetitive, and could have used some of the space to offer a brief explanation of, say, sickle cell anemia. The book also ends abruptly with "Water on the Move," which explores the role of urine. A final summary as the last chapter would have made it flow better. Overall, while it presents the basics, teachers will want additional resources on the topic of blood. It is part of Amicus' "How the Body Works" series. Reviewer: Elizabeth Leis-Newman
