Overview

The New York Times bestseller that’s perfect for any parent or Grandparent

A few years ago, Mike Huckabee began drafting a series of letters to his grandchildren, Chandler and Scarlett, about the things that matter most: faith, love, family, overcoming adversity, and staying true to your values in the face of failure and temptation.

Those letters are collected in this charming and inspirational bestseller, full of personal stories. They are nonpolitical and have universal appeal, no matter what your age, religion, or personal situation. We can all benefit from what Huckabee wishes he had known during tough times, rather than learning the hard way.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee has been a Republican presidential candidate, a Southern Baptist pastor, a rock band bass guitarist, a parent, and, perhaps least stressfully, a grandparent. In these letters, he shares decades of hard-acquired wisdom with his grandchildren Chandler and Scarlett. Fans of the Huckabee's soulful, unthreatening style will not be surprised that these missives focus on issues of faith, family, and ethical behavior.

Publishers Weekly
Former Arkansas governor, presidential candidate, and current Fox News talk show host, Huckabee (A Simple Christmas) puts his trademark folksiness to use in a staged set of “grandpa’s letters” to his one-year-old grandson, Chandler, and baby granddaughter, Scarlett. He hopes the two children will establish a “personal relationship with the Creator of All Things” and tells Chandler and Scarlett to be kind, especially to the less fortunate. He discusses love and marriage, the environment, and even creativity in decent, heartwarming ways, constantly referring to himself as “grandpa” for effect. In one pleasant chapter Huckabee makes the convincing case that pets, especially dogs, “make us better humans.” He endorses patriotism and military heroism. Huckabee’s down-home style attracts a loyal crowd from agrarian pietists to Tea Party activists. Here, nothing complex tugs at Huckabee’s reassuring, anodyne thoughts, though that is likely a limitation of the form. However, he affirms values that are worth reiterating, even if he does so in treacly ways, and his easy-to-read essays will reinforce his admirers’ fixed ideas. Something to pass on, never outdated!

My children never got to know their Grandpa so I'm always trying to give him a life through stories, jokes and words of wisdom he gave to me along life's way. The values in this book are those also of my dad so I'm giving each of my three boys a copy to help them along life's way. Thank you Mr. Huckabee for being so honest and open about life. The loving way in which this is written will be a book to pass on to your children's children.

    A wonderful read!
