Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathy Leggett
Tackling the job of learning to read is a joint effort between adults and young children. Making sure that the right books are placed into the hands of the early reader can make all the difference. This beginning to read picture book is one of those perfect books to achieve that goal. Dragon is a classic character who has been featured in early reading books for 34 years. The world's favorite pet dragon is back with a new adventure—going to the firehouse. Dragon is taking a field trip with his classmates. Basic sight word vocabulary is reinforced over and over as the class and the teacher read the stop sign and waits for the light to turn green so they can cross the street. They go and go and go. Meeting the firefighter and his friend the firedog takes Dragon all around the firehouse. All are excited when they see something big and red and they go up and up. Repetition, repetition, repetition with a controlled pre-primer vocabulary makes for an outstanding first book for emergent readers. Adults reading this book with a child are given a multitude of activities and suggestions for using this carefully written series of books to build phonics skills, text comprehension and vocabulary concepts. A web site is included where all the titles written by this author can be found: not just a writer of Dear Dragon, but hundreds more books that all provide reading of high frequency words in context, including everything from fairy tales and folklore to poems and riddles. This is a perfect book to accompany a visit to the fire department and will be particularly appealing to pre-K ages and all young firefighter enthusiasts. Reviewer: Kathy Leggett
