Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Melissa J. Rickey
Holly, a young girl at the beach, finds a mermaid's purse. She writes a note in the sand and is surprised to find the purse back on the beach the next morning with a letter enclosed. Holly's new friend is a Mermaid Princess. She lives in the Mer Palace with her parents, the Mer Queen and King. In her letter, the Mer Princess writes, " I wish you could see it, but I'm afraid that humans are not allowed to visit. At night I often swim up from my home beneath the waves and sit on a rock in the moonlight to look at the world." As the two correspond, their friendship grows. They share their thoughts and lives, leave gifts for one another, and solve a problem as well. How Holy helps the Mer Princess find the small golden key she has lost, thereby saving the important Mer festival, is shown over the course of the summer's correspondence and the strong friendship that develops between Holly and her magical friend. Watercolor paintings show the contrast between the bright beach days in oranges and yellows and the muted blues, greens, and soft pastels of the undersea world. The Mer Princess's finely scripted letters and small gifts, enclosed in their own overlaid envelopes, are a special feature of the text. Reviewer: Melissa J. Rickey
