More About This Book

Overview

The letters Joseph War, one of the elite Marine Scout Snipers, wrote home reveal a side of the Vietnam war seldom seen. Whether under nigthly mortar attack in An Hoa, with a Marine company in the bullet-scarred jungle, on secret missions to Laos, or on dangerous two-man hunter-kills, Ward lived the war in a way few men did. And he fought the enemy as few men did—up close and personal.

    What a great book

Not much can be said that hasn't already about this book. I highly suggest reading it. It takes you from Joesh Ward's first day of boot to his tour in Vietnam right up to when he leaves. He covers a lot of aspects about the war. A must read!

    A reviewer

Thru the deepest dungeon to the highest peak. Ward takes you thru his experience fighting in Vietnam. Some things are amazingly action packed. Others are so humbling, you'll be equally amazed. In here you will read what one good American or enemy sniper can do. Also about how he met a humble Medal of Honor recipient. The stress of war. The miraculous survival of a suicidal soldier who stood up in front of the enemy, untouched! Some of his kill assignments. Displays of humanity and inhumanity. All that and much much more.

    more from this reviewer

the true 'nitty gritty' of a very dirty war'

Out of the many books I've read about the Viet Nam conflict, I was greatly taken aback by the title. I thought this would be a soft story of a G.I. complaining to his mom of the stress of war, but this book is nothing like that! I felt that I was actually there! The descriptions of combat, the feelings that Ward expresses, and the exerpts of Ward's letters to his mother truly convey how horrible this war was to the average 18-19 year old foot soldier. Without ruining the story to the potential reader, there was one anecdote of where Ward and his comrades find a 25 year old female NVA soldier barely alive and bleeding to death in a tunnel complex that the Americans discovered, and the description of how she was executed was so barbaric and horrible I couldn't stop thinking about it for days! Other topics discussed were 'Fragging', failed Vietnamization, the assasinations of the 'Phoenix Program', G.I. drug use and racial tensions. A must read!

    Good book!

This book allows for a in-depth in sight into a soldier¿s mind and feeling. This book is so descriptive that when you read it you feel you right there with the soldiers fighting along side them you can almost feel the pain they feel and the heat of the jungle. So if your into action packed war stories then this book is right up you ally!

    A Mom's View

When our son left for the Navy--in a field that keeps me awake at night--a dear friend of ours handed me this book. Considering its vivid account of the brutality of war, it may seem like it was an odd choice, but just as strangely, I took great comfort in Mr. Ward's letters to his mother. Mothers will be mothers and sons will be sons. I am thankful for a son who tries to comfort me just as Mr. Ward tried to comfort his. I am also thankful I don't have to live with the consuming fear Mr. Ward's mother must have lived with. This is not an 'easy' book for a mother to read, you may have to set it down from time to time, but it's well worth it. It will move you and change you. For the better. By the way, the friend who gave me the book was Joey Posey--the same Joe Posey Mr. Ward speaks of. Though there are times you can tell Joey still carries the pain of his injuries, he never complains. He just carries on like a true Marine.

    A d@^m good read...do it!

As a child I used to watch war movies with my Dad, a Marine. As an adult who grew up in the tubulent 60's, I was fascinated by the title and the cover picture. Upon reading the book I was swept away by the author's vivid attention to detail, his personal account as a scout sniper, and his storytelling ability. To my disappointment I searched and did not find another book by Mr. Ward. Dear Author: please write another!

    Inspirational

I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. The war was terrible, but J.T. was a born leader who proved to be remarkable. It brings honor to a questionable war and respect to all Marine snipers.

Inspiring - We should never forget.

J.T. Ward's book was like several other 'Sniper' books I have read. I was looking for the fine points of long range shooting, but discovered much more about the men like him - they LIVED THE WAR! Everyday risks, dangers, near hits, and (unfortunately for buddies) near misses, didn't stop them. I am inspired by the fact that J.T. and his kind handled situations that no man should be exposed to - that is: the necessary evil called WAR. God bless the many of the same kind who didn't come back.

    A Sniper's Vietnam - Fascinating material.

Great book. Full of everything we DON'T want to know about Vietnam. Ward incorporates the letters he writes to his mother within the writings of his everyday experiences. Fascinating material. I only wish there was more photography. The graphic descriptions tend to make up for this only drawback, though.

Truly Compelling View of a War We Refused To See!

J.T. Ward brought home what most of us will never know: scars and memories of a war -- a war that we refused to see and one that he and many others like him paid for in more ways than one. I was held by his words, recollections, and letters home. It brought me closer to understanding the other side of the war. Very easy reading. I recommend this book to anyone interested in Vietnam or this era in general. Thank you so very much, Mr. Ward, for creating this great book to share with so many!

The true story of a real soldier.

This book was a story that is seldom told. I think that J.T. Ward tells of his secretive life as a sniper with very great detail. I apreciate the MOTHER for the encouragement given! Thumbs Up!!
