Overview

Dear Oprah: How I Beat Cancer and Learned to Love Daytime TV is the tale of a battle with an unusual cancer. Told with snarky humor and pathos, this is the story of an interrupted life and the struggle back. There's never a good time to get cancer but Wendy wrote this book to explore all areas of the cancer experience, including how to survive, how to recover, and how caregivers and friends can support their loved ones.

Wendy was diagnosed with rectal cancer just as her career was accelerating, her son was finishing his last year at college and her daughter was planning a wedding. Trapped at home during the daytime for the first time in her life, she learned to appreciate daytime TV talk shows, the wild lives of celebrities and also learned how to slow down and enjoy life. There is no five year plan. No ten year plan. There is only today and it is Wendy's goal to make the best of every day.

With the help of her mother, her husband, her family and friends, Wendy was able to beat cancer and overcome the depression that threatened to overwhelm her. This book offers specific advice including information on treatment, the medical system, recovery and help for caregivers. It includes Web sites and specific information for anyone suffering from cancer, but particularly for those who battle colorectal cancer.

This book contains strong language and sarcastic humor. It is not meant for the faint of heart. If you liked the movie 50/50 and the television show The Big C, you'll enjoy this memoir. Wendy Thornton is a prize-winning freelance writer in Gainesville, Florida. She has been published in literary magazines and journals across the United States, and in England, Scotland and India. She is currently at work on a novel about the Seminole chief Osceola, and a memoir about music, Sounding the Depths.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon Kindle - Blukie B
This is a wonderfully relatable tale for anyone going through an unexpected illness or caring for someone experiencing an unexpected illness. Wendy Thornton writes about her personal experiences with great humor and wit. At the same time, she includes practical advice for both patients and caregivers throughout the book.
Amazon - Lois Hamon, RN
ntense, candid and really mind boggling that this author had the courage to tell it like it is. Wendy's memoir of her experiences from the time of diagnosis through the second set of chemo after surgery was the best I have ever read. This author spoke of things most patients worry about but seldom have the courage to ask questions or discuss. The appendixes are excellent. They are accurate and very helpful for the people who are trying to find their way in a new and terrifying world.
Amazon - Mary Bridgman, LLM
This book should be required reading for cancer patients and caregivers. Wendy writes with unflinching honesty and good humor about her experience with cancer--the good, the bad, and the ugly. She includes letters to her friends, family, and medical professionals. Easy to read and very helpful, gives practical tips and includes a list of resources at the end. From now on, this will be my first gift to anyone dealing with cancer! Wendy knows what's she's writing about, and she does it well.
Amazon - Susie Baxter, PhD
The author takes the reader through her day-to-day struggles, while also reflecting on her past life. She never loses her sense of humor as she describes the situations and the odd positions she sometimes finds herself in. From her experiences, she offers resources for those who find themselves facing a cancer diagnosis -- for example, "Don't read statistics. You are not a statistic." And she lists rules for caregivers and friends as well.
