Dear Santa Claus,
I saw a man in a store today who said he was Santa
Claus. He was dressed like you, but was it you?

It's time for Holly to make her Christmas list, but she has a few questions for Santa Claus first. So she decides to write notes to Santa instead and is amazed when he replies — five times! Readers will be as excited as Holly to reach inside real envelopes and find her missives from Santa. Along with the removable letters, they'll discover an advent calendar, a Santa Claus ornament, a foldout reindeer guide (with answers to common questions, plus favorite reindeer jokes), and one last, special treasure that Holly finally dares to wish for.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The team behind Dear Tooth Fairy heads to the North Pole with the paper-over-board Dear Santa Claus by Alan Durant, illus. by Vanessa Cabban. Letters from Santa are folded up and tucked into envelopes on the pages of this fun storybook, which concludes with the granting of heroine Holly's wish. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Lots of children write letters to Santa—but how many get letters back? Holly actually strikes up a correspondence and in this title youngsters can pull letters out of little envelopes and read comments from Santa like "P.S. It is so cold here that there are icicles in my beard!" Holly is building her nerve to ask for the one gift she really wants—a ticket for a sleigh ride—but Santa has figured it out from all her questions. The sparkling ticket is in an envelope, too, as is a tiny calendar with even tinier windows to open on the way to December 25. There are lots of small pieces that could get lost with this book, but children will likely enjoy the process of opening and re-opening each letter and finding the accompanying treasures. They might even be inspired to write their own full-length letters. The illustrations are glittery, bright and warm, with a feel of homespun holiday. There are lots of details for sharp eyes to find, especially on the page where the elves are preparing Santa's sleigh for its magical journey. This could become a holiday favorite for the youngest children in the house. 2005, Candlewick, Ages 3 to 7.

Kirkus Reviews
A little girl named Holly corresponds with Santa during the month of December in this holiday offering that includes her hand-printed letters as part of the text and removable notes (and other tiny treasures) from Santa tucked into small, attached envelopes. The story alternates between Christmas preparations at Holly's house and those at the North Pole, with detailed watercolor illustrations of Holly and her little brother alternating with scenes of the elves and Santa hard at work. The five envelopes with notes from Santa also include a miniature advent calendar, a paper Christmas ornament, a guide to reindeer (including jokes) and a shiny, plastic ticket good for one sleigh ride with Santa. The sleigh ride was Holly's special Christmas gift, requested at the very last moment despite repeated reminders from Santa in his notes to get those gift requests in early. The magical messenger service provided by the elves and the thrilling sleigh ride add excitement to the plot, but the main draw here is the little envelopes with the goodies inside, which make this unsuitable for most library collections but a likely gift idea for doting grandmas.
