The Futrelle Sisters, Frankie, Honey Raye and Twink, are throwing a wedding. Frankie has almost made herself sick with elaborate preparations for her daughter Tina Jos antebellum-inspired wedding, and the rumor mill in their small town of Fayro, Texas, is working overtime. No surprise there, the Futrelle Sisters have never been strangers to gossip. After all, they did survive the scandalous breakup of their almost-famous gospel singing trio, The Sermonettes. But Twinks desperate attempts to get her boyfriend of fifteen-and-one-half years down the aisle, Frankies ongoing conversations with their dead mother, and Honey Rayes tendency to race to the altar at every opportunity have kept tongues wagging for years. In spite of her own marital problems, Frankie has held steadfastly to the hope that she can pull off one "final Futrelle occasion" with elegance and style with the help of the cantankerous wedding coordinator, Miss Geneva, who runs the local floral shop/bus depot. But on the day of the nuptials, Frankies hope begins to dim when she discovers Twinks alternative solution to an expensive catered wedding dinner is a potluck supper sponsored by Clovis Sanfords House of Meat. When the prodigal Honey Raye arrives at the church in skintight gold lam, consumed by hot flashes and a steely determination to right old family wrongs, Frankies hope is shaken. It is lost completely when word reaches the church that Tina Jo and her fianc have fled Fayro and eloped. The sisters ultimately pull together to find ways to keep the unsuspecting guests in the pews while a highway patrolman races off to track down the runaway bride and groom. As a last resort, and to the delight of the citizenryof Fayro, Texas, The Sermonettes reunite and sing again.

Friends invited me to a performance of this play in Asheville, NC, and I wasn't too interested but went anyway and am so glad I did. The show was fantastic and I was knocked out to find a brand new play that was fresh, filled with delicious Southern humor and was, in a nutshell, hilarious. I'd never been to a play where the laughter started after the first line and continued through the show. It was awesome. As soon as I could, I bought a copy and read the play to see if it was as funny as it seemed to be that night. It was! I had just as much fun as I'd had at the performance. The characters are honestly written, their problems - stretched toward the outlandish at times - are real and it's wonderful to hear such witty lines again. These writers are fantastic. I'm eager to read their next one. 'Dearly Beloved' will be a theatre favorite in no time!
This play is pure entertainment! It's the story of three sisters who were once an almost-famous gospel singing trio, now grown women grappling with issues of acceptance and forgiveness and the frustrating physical and emotional changes life brings. This hilarious, heart-warming story is filled with good humor, belly laughs and the folksy wisdom of the eccentric residents of the mythical small-town of Fayro, Texas.
