This is the second book of the series of Sir Charles Sheridan and Kate Ardleigh that takes place in Victorian England. Skillfully woven into the stories of murder and aristocratic mayhem is the burgeoning Industrial Revolution and the change it has on life in England. Throw in the growing love story between the two main characters and snippets of life in the small towns in the English countryside and you have the makings of a fine series.
Gallows Green takes up the story after the death of Kate's Aunts, leaving her the house and property. Kate begins to befriend the townspeople, her servants and the aristocrats around her. Her secret as a writer of Penny Dreadfuls is still safe and she uses the misfortunes of those around her to incorporate in her writing and she investigates the latest murder somewhat to the chagrin of Sir Charles, himself an amateur CSI type criminologist.
This is an easy read, good for a lazy summer day. The author paints a pretty picture of Victorian England and you can feel yourself drawn into stories because you know the history they are living at the time. Murders get solved in a genteel fashion. I am looking forward to the next pairing of these two main characters.

If you like a good murder mystery without a lot of gore with likeable characters this series is for you. I enjoy a good old fashion mystery where the who dun it is solved by common sense. The settings are rich, the characters are real and the history/realism adds to the story line. I enjoyed the book so much I purchased the next in the series. Death at Daisy's a Folly. I was already a fan of Susan Witting Albert. Writing with hubby under this pseudonym changes nothing.

If you like Sherlock Holmes, this has some pleasant similarities. At moments goes too much toward the romantic style, but overall keeps one interested in the plot. I like the historical background, very interesting.

This book is suspenseful and thrilling. I couldn't keep my eyes off it. It was my favorite book of all time.
