Overview

Annie Darling—owner of the mystery bookstore, Death on Demand—prefers fictional crimes as opposed to the real things. But in one tragic week, two acts of violence shake the island community of Broward’s Rock. First, a beloved doctor is found shot dead, seemingly by his own hand. Only days later, a local artist is arrested after his wife is found murdered, bludgeoned by her husband’s sculpting mallet.

Convinced her brother did not commit suicide, the doctor’s sister turns to Annie and her husband, Max, for help. She has found a cryptic sketch her brother drew, linking him with the murdered woman. Did someone want them both out of the picture?

With the police considering both cases as good as closed, it’s up to Annie and Max to sort through a rogues’ gallery of suspects to see if someone is trying to frame the artist. But if Annie isn’t careful, she may find herself having her own brush with death…

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
03/03/2014
In Hart’s engaging 24th Death on Demand mystery (after 2013’s Dead, White, and Blue), bookstore owner and sleuth Annie Darling is convinced that the apparent suicide of a local doctor and the murder of Jane Corley, an imperious, wealthy 30-something, are connected. Jane’s husband, Tom Edmonds, a painter and sculptor, is the logical suspect, not least because his mallet was the weapon that did Jane in. But is Tom really behind the sudden spate of deaths in tiny Broward’s Rock, S.C.? Perhaps the killer is Tom’s lover, Frankie, who seems to realize that Tom would never leave his wife. Or perhaps Jane was murdered by Kevin Hubbard, an employee suspected of malfeasance at her company, Corley Enterprises—or by Kevin’s wife, who stands to lose a lot if her husband’s shenanigans are exposed and his livelihood threatened. Understated local color and a charming cast of supporting characters will keep Annie’s fans glued to the page. Agent: Deborah Schneider, Gelfman Schneider Literary Agency. (May)

Death at the Door is the twenty-fourth book in the A Death on Demand series.

The morning after a party at the Wyler Art Gallery, Dr. Paul Martin is found dead from an apparent suicide by his sister Lucy. Lucy finds a cryptic message in her brothers study that alludes to the fact that Jane Corley's life is in danger. Shortly thereafter Jane's body is found by her husband Tom Edwards, she has beaten with a sculptor mallet of her husband. Tom immediately becomes a suspect in his wife death, but claims to have on the mainland when Paul Martin was killed.

Annie and Max find that there are many suspects other than Tom. Jane's brother David lives on allowance from his father's estate and administered by Jane. David is living beyond his means and possibly he wants all the estate. Also on Annie's list is Kevin Hubbard, who manages the marina that Jane owns and from, Hubbard has reportedly siphoning off money.

Annie and Max can once again count on Ingrid, Emma and Henry, loyal customer of Annie's bookstore, to help solve the mystery of who the killer is.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as I have others. Characters were introduced , one after the other, just by their first name and with no mention of who they might be related to or how they fit into the story line. As the story progresses , more is learned, but I found myself having to flip back forth to try and get straight the many characters.

I bought a Carolyn Hart book @ a yard sale, that's all it took!

I bought a Carolyn Hart book @ a yard sale, that's all it took! What a writer! Now I am trying to get all the ones she has out there. Reading the Bailey series now, I need to get all her Death on Demand books & slowly but surely I will. I started out w/writers like Victoria Holt & have a my own well stocked library of fiction & nonfiction books. Every now & then it's good to read a series of fiction & this writer has won me over. I have been reading forever & know a good write when I come across one & she is a "Darn Good Writer!" Complete w/who done it & a little humor, it's a treat to add her to my library & I hope who ever gets my books treasures them as I do. Oh, I put Carolyn Hart right up there w/Sue Grafton & an old favorite of mine Dorothy Eden! Never leave the house w/o a book is my motto & this writer will not let you forget her book......very, very good writer.

Suggest prequel for series is getting stale and lost humor

Marriage often limits a series and frankly hubby here and his mother is a drag just say she is getting fat might help if she stopped with fried foods

    Loved It As Usual

I really enjoy the Death On Demand series. This one was no exception. The characters are interesting and the plot kept me guessing. Can't wait for the next one.
