Overview

Everybody dies sooner or later. It’s the people dying sooner that cause attorney Mici Smith and Dr. Rob Craig to work together to seek answers.

Mici’s response to Elinor Grace’s death and the Grace family’s suspicions she was murdered is, as always, thorough. What she doesn’t realize is obtaining the exhumation order for Elinor’s body will be opening the proverbial Pandora’s box. Like Pandora, her life will never be the same again.

At the behest of the Grace family, Mici hires Rob to perform the autopsy. Rob finds that Elinor has been poisoned. His gut tells him it is neither suicide nor an accident.

After the police refuse to look into Elinor Grace’s suspicious death, Rob and Mici start down the twisted path to discover who would want to kill the elderly woman. Did the person who killed Elinor Grace also kill the Medical Director of the viatical insurance company which had bought her life insurance policy? Was Elinor killed as part of a scheme to make money for an unscrupulous CEO? Or, was she killed for something she knew? Who is Master X and why does he want to kill Mici and Rob?

The answers to these questions lead the couple to a scene right out of Edgar Allen Poe, complete with a dark and stormy night, baying hounds and a crypt.

Editorial Reviews

Author - Robert Vaughan
Mici Smith and Rob Craig are exceptionally intriguing characters. Their dealing with the evil machinations of “Master X” creates a compelling storyline that rushes to a powerful and suspenseful conclusion. Monette Michaels writes with knowledge, skill, and passion. That’s a hard combination to beat.
Romantic Times Magazine - Toby Bromberg
Although the identity of the killer is evident from early on, Death Benefits has enough danger and action to please the most serious of mystery readers. In addition, the scintillating story of Rob and Mici will tantalize all lovers of mystery and suspense.
Word Weaving - Cindy Penn
A novel of extremes, Death Benefits moves from the mansions of the privileged to the playground of the very wicked and decadent. Moving through a world of danger, vicious passion and murder, Death Benefits exposes the fascination we all hold for pushing the boundaries. Exercise extreme caution, for it will keep you absorbed by its dangerous allure.
Inscriptions Magazine - B. Lynn Goodwin
From the first line … Monette Michaels builds a strong story. She uses detail impressively, planting subtle foreshadowing. She has a strong ability to build suspense and make the reader wonder about possible outcomes. “Death Benefits” is a tightly written story which departs from the norm and will entertain and intrigue adults who are not put off by adult content. I recommend it for mature audiences who appreciate a well-written mystery.
The Best Reviews - Kelley Hartsell
Ms. Michaels keeps the reader enthralled from the first page and one will be on the edge of the seat as the pages keep turning, all the way to the shocking and truly gothic style ending, which would do even Edgar Allen Poe proud.
