Overview

Aphra Connolly is being chased by some very dangerous people. She knows her survival depends upon staying far away from love interest Seth, and listening to her mom's lectures on the finer points of anonymity and survival. But how is a girl supposed to live under the radar and not think about her boyfriend when she's in Paris-the most romantic city in the world? When her mom's contact in Paris is found floating in the Seine with a deadly message stuffed in his mouth, Aphra realizes that she will never be able to stop running unless she confronts the situation head-on. Sneaking away from her mom, Aphra tracks down the criminal mastermind in Italy, only to unwittingly reveal Seth's location. And her mistake has just put them both in mortal danger. . . .

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
In this third title in Gerber's spy/mystery novel series (following Death by Bikini and Death by Latte), Aphra and her CIA agent mother have gone underground to escape detection by their archenemy, The Mole. But just as they start to relax and let down their guard in their new French environment, they are discovered by one of The Mole's henchman, a mysterious figure who has leathery skin and smokes cheap French cigarettes. When her mom's French contact is discovered bound and drowned in the Seine, Aphra knows it is time to take action against The Mole. Plus this is the perfect opportunity to reunite with her true love, Seth, even though she has been warned by the CIA to stay away from him—for both their safety. Exotic locations, plenty of romance, and an action-packed plot will appeal to reluctant readers, as well as those who enjoy books with strong female characters and anyone who loved the TV series "Alias." A cliffhanger ending hints at another sequel—and at ongoing challenges for Aphra. Reviewer: Norah Piehl
School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up

In this third installment, Aphra Connolly is in hiding in France along with her CIA-agent mother, Natalie. After seven months of peaceful anonymity, their location is discovered by one of The Mole's henchmen, a shadowy figure who wears snakeskin boots and has the distinctive smell of cheap French cigarettes. Aphra and her mother must escape and make their way to Paris, where they reestablish contact with the CIA. However, when Natalie's contact is found drowned with denim ligatures around his hands and feet and a cryptic note stuffed in his mouth, Aphra decides to embark on a dangerous mission to Italy to be reunited with her true love, Seth, and trap The Mole. Although lacking in well-developed characters, the breezy plot has enough fast-paced action to please mystery lovers and reluctant readers alike. This novel can stand alone, but most readers will want to go back to Death by Bikini and Death by Latte (both Sleuth/Speak, 2008) before diving into this fluffy read.-Amy V. Action-Packed Aphra!

This is a very very very very very good book. i couldn't put it down. after i read the first two, i was just dying to get my hands on this! Aphra, the main character, is awesome and very likable. there was more action in this one then in the previous two. i absolutaly loved this book! the only problem that i had with this book is that it ended! i just want more and more and more of aphra's adventures and so i am really really hoping that linda gerber is in the process of writing a sequel :-).

    Fast Paced YA story

My thoughts...Wow, this was a fast-paced novel. I could not put it down because the action did not stop, at all. For me, this was a refreshing change. There were no vampires, no werewolves, no supernatural creatures, just bad guys, with guns and bombs. The main characters are in hiding until they realize that they are being hunted by a very dangerous criminal. They don't know who to trust, or if their actions will endanger their friends and loved ones. Gerber left me on the edge of my seat, afraid for the characters.

This book should appeal to YA readers of all ages and genders. Death By Denim offers readers intense action, adventure, danger, mystery, and a bit of romance. There are some mild kissing scenes, nothing that would offend. I will definitely be reading more from this author.

    Reviewed by Tasha for TeensReadToo.com

Aphra Connolly is back and being chased by some very dangerous people. What makes it even worse is that Aphra has to completely forget about her boyfriend, Seth, to keep him out of trouble too - but that's extremely hard for a girl when she's in Paris, the most romantic city in the world.

Aphra quickly comes to realize that she really cannot mess around when her mother's contact in Paris turns up floating in the Seine with a deadly message stuffed into his mouth. So she sets off to confront the situation head-on. Sneaking away from the protection of her mom, Aphra heads out to find the mastermind behind all of the danger.

What she doesn't know is that she's accidentally uncovered Seth's location and has put him in danger, as well. Can Aphra get herself (and Seth for that matter), out of this sticky situation - and get herself out of trouble once and for all?

These books are so much fun. First there is Aphra, who I think is hilarious. The adventures that she went on with her mom in this volume of the series were the best yet, and I could absolutely not put the book down. Also, Aphra's relationship with Seth was great, as always. Seth sounds so adorable, and to see the two of them in action together was fun and exhilarating.

The writing was also good and kept me in a great amount of suspense. Overall, I really enjoyed this third installment in the Aphra Connolly series (and how I hope Linda Gerber decides to continue with more!) and highly suggest that if you haven't had a chance to read any of them you pick them right up. And on that note, I don't think it is necessary to read the books in order, as you kind of get caught up with previous adventures within the first few pages.

So what are you waiting for? Grab one of these books today and get set to go on a great and suspenseful adventure!
