Overview

Few men can say they have known Africa as Peter Hathaway Capstick has know it-- leading safaris through lion country; tracking man-eating leopards along tangled jungle paths; running for cover as fear-maddened elephants stampede in all directions. And of the few who have known this dangerous way of life, fewer still can recount their adventures with the flair of this former professional hunter-turned-writer.Based on Capstick's own experiences and the personal accounts of his colleagues, Death in the Long Grass portrays the great killers of the African bush-- not only the lion, leopard, and elephant, but the primitive rhino and the crocodile waiting for its unsuspecting prey, the titanic hippo and the Cape buffalo charging like an express train out of control. Capstick was a born raconteur whose colorful descriptions and eye for exciting, authentic detail bring us face to face with some of the most ferocious killers in the world-- underrated killers like the surprisingly brave and cunning hyena, silent killers such as the lightning-fast black mamba snake, collective killers like the wild dog. Readers can lean back in a chair, sip a tall, iced drink, and revel in the kinds of stories Hemingway and Ruark used to hear in hotel bars from Nairobi to Johannesburg, as veteran hunters would tell of what they heard beyond the campfire and saw through the sights of an express rifle. As thrilling as any novel, as taut and exciting as any adventure story, Death in the Long Grass takes us deep into the heart of darkness to view the Africa that few people have ever seen.

    Interesting and action-packed

¿Death in the Long Grass¿, by Peter Hathaway Capstick. It is written in first person and is not just one big story, but is made up of many short stories and tales of adventure while in the African bush. There are nine chapters that contain Peter Capstick¿s tales and encounters with specific animals such as the lion, elephant, leopard, cape buffalo, hippo, crocodile, rhino and snakes, the eight deadliest animals of the African bush, There is also a chapter on some of the underrated killers that he has come across. Each chapter is labeled as one of the animals. The style of writing is really easy to understand, because it¿s an autobiography of Peter as he reflects on some of his past experiences. in one passage from the book, Peter is called to sort out a man-eating lion that has just killed one of the native villagers. So Peter and his tracker, ¿Silent,¿ track down the lion and are very close. ¿Ahead of me, Silent stiffened and then solidified into a ebony statue. He held his crouch with his head cocked for almost a minute, watching something off to the left of the spoor. The wild thought raced through my skull that if the lion cam now, the rifle would be too slippery to hold, since my palms were sweating so heavily. What the hell was Silent looking at anyway?¿ (42). Well Peter get s away in one piece, but his gun bearer gets his arm a little chewed up. The book goes on though the different chapters describing the animal¿s characteristics and behavior problems that make them some of the most deadliest animals on earth. In each chapter, He writes at least five to ten graphic stories wile describing the animals and why they do what they do, He also describes the different abilities that the animals have that sets them apart from other species of the same animal family. ¿Death in the Long Grass¿ is a very interesting and action-packed book and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys to learning about hunting dangerous game.
