Overview

From the author of the Agatha Raisin television series...DEATH OF A CELEBRITY: A Hamish Macbeth MysteryMurder on the Telly Lochdubh, a remote village reached only by a one-track lane, nestles serenely amid Scotland's hills...until well-known TV reporter Crystal French races into town in her bright BMW. And Constable Hamish Macbeth, dourly wed to duty instead of the fiancee who dumped him, promptly gives her a summons for reckless driving. Outraged, Crystal makes Macbeth's life a misery with a TV report on policing in the Highlands. When she also rakes up old local scandals for her new hit show, Macbeth notes that someone besides himself might be dead keen to stop her. Then someone does-with stealth and violence. Now, finding out who did it will lead the laconic Macbeth down roads he never envisioned, into a dark story of passion and vengeance...and perhaps a crisis of the heart all his own.

Hamish Macbeth, the most sucessful layabout in Scottland can't let the simple solutions rest when he knows the real killer(s)is still out there. The death of a celebrity TV personality is the trigger that brings to light some old crimes and many personal shortcomings. Hamish has a new supervisor, who unlike the others, has more decency than ego, and a new love interest who might have to decide he just isn't worth all the trouble. Combined with the old regulars and a lot of new faces, this Highland village mystery has enough to keep us guessing all the way to the very satisfying ending.

It was with pleasure and great affection for the story characters that this reader opened the latest in the Hamish MacBeth series. Fans of M.C. Beaton will not be disappointed - nearly all the regulars show up: the nosey Currie sisters, the motherly Mrs. Wellington, etc. This time Hamish is embroiled in the murders of minor television mavens who have invaded his turf to stir up trouble. As always, his love life is fraught with mixups and mistaken intentions. A good fun read for those who enjoy the cozy village mystery - with a light touch.

Hamish Macbeth is the village bobby in Lochdubh in the Scottish Highlands. It is an isolated quaint little place where everyone knows everyone else and crime is kept to a minimum. Hamish¿s home is part of the village jail because major crimes occur so infrequently. He resents newcomers who make more work for him. If it were up to the local bobby, there would be a gate preventing any outsiders from coming into the village.

Hamish is aghast and disgusted when Strathbane Television sends BBC reporter Crystal French into Lochdubh to do a show about a Highland Village. Crystal is more interested in getting scandals individual crofters want to hide than in doing an informative show. She gets a lot of people riled up and the next thing Hamish realizes is that she¿s shot to death in an isolated part of the village. Her replacement is also shot and Hamish has to find out who killed whom while fighting off the advances a woman who wants a relationship with him.

M.C. Beaton paints a quite a picture of village life in the Highlands of Scotland due to her characters feeling so real. This enables the reader to picture the lifestyle of the locals. Her protagonist is an interesting person, who prefers being the local constable to join and preferring the sedate pace and the wholesome virtues of village life rather than join New Scotland Yard. DEATH OF A CELEBRITY is a wonderful police procedural story that makes reading fun.

Another entertaining Hammish MacBeth mystery. This time television personalities are being murdered and Hamish helps his supervisor and the CID to investigate. He also has a little help Elspeth who seems to have some physic abilities. There also seems to be a little romance starting to develop between Hamish and Elspeth. So, on to the next Hamish adventure.
