“Death of the Big Kahuna” earns 5/5 Umbrella-ed Mai Tai Cocktails at a Beach Tiki Bar! To escape life in Vermont, Carrie Jorgensen heads out to Kauai, but she discovers finding a job and trying to save the relationship with her surfing instructor boyfriend is not so easy. Fortune shines bright when she lands a waitressing job at the Loco Moco Café, a restaurant part of the Aloha Lagoon Resort. The other employees and the head chef seem nice, but the owner, dubbed the “Big Kahuna,” is very worrisome with his uncomfortable stares, boisterous manner, and questionable employee relationships. It gets more worrisome when Carrie happens upon the ‘Big Kahuna’ in the kitchen…dead with a knife in his chest, pineapple in his mouth, and a note with the big bold letters, “PIG.” Keanu’s prophetic comments saying everyone had a reason to want Hale dead seems very accurate. From harassed waitresses and underpaid chefs to a very angry wife scorned, there seems to be more motives than the police could ever manage, especially when the police didn’t even notice a key piece of evidence was unaccounted for. Carrie decides she needs to take life by the palm trees and figure it out on her own uncovering betrayal, a tragic past, and a key on the stairs. Circumstantial circumstances may make the new girl the perfect patsy, but true friendships may save Carrie from disaster. This book written by Catherine Bruns is the sixth in Gemma Halliday Publisher’s multi-author series Aloha Lagoon Mystery, and it just may be my favorite. Catherine offers a clever bite from ‘Karma’ giving many of us, who have suffered working for an insufferable boss, a cathartic experience. The characters are well developed people you might just recognize as friends, family, or co-workers. Carrie is a bruised soul for whom you are sympathetic, and that keeps you engaged with her journey and the strength she finds. Descriptions bring the humidity and the tropical aromas to life, and dialogue is as engaging as eavesdropping. This is a marvelous reading journey for it’s humor, suspense, and satisfying resolution.

This is a great book; this is the sixth book in the Aloha Lagoon Mystery series written by Catherine Bruns. New to both Hawaii and the Aloha Lagoon Resort, Carrie Jorgenson has big dreams of stardom. But while she awaits fame and fortune, she's forced to accept a job waitressing at the resort's The Loco Moco Café. It isn't long before she discovers the dish on her new boss—also known to many as "The Big Kahuna." Hale Akamu is rich, handsome, repulsive...and dead. When Carrie discovers Hale's lifeless body, she's suddenly forced into yet another role—amateur sleuth. With everyone from Carrie to the saucy chef to the café's hot assistant manager under suspicion, Carrie needs to track a killer before she becomes his next main entrée! This is a great book with a wonderful story and well developed characters. This book will keep you reading long into the night. If you are looking for a great book, then you need to read this book. I am looking forward to reading the next book by this great author. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader’s copy of this book. The free book held no determination on my personal review.

Another winner in this series. Carrie heads to Hawaii to follow her boyfriend and she has doubts about her and the trouble begins. She has to take a job waitressing at the resorts cafe. Her boss is the known as the "Big Kahuna" as well as a big pain in the you know what. He is not well liked and unfortunately Carrie is the one to find his dead body. So she is forced into finding the killer to keep herself off the suspect list. I agree with other reviewers in that you can read this book stand alone from the other in the series. Nice time of year at least for those of us in colder climes to enjoy a great location and story. This book does not disappoint.

I'm a big fan of the Aloha Lagoon Mysteries. The newest in the series did not fail to capture my attention. While the magic of some in the series is humor, I found Death of the Big Kahuna to centered more on a plot-driven drama with real-to-life characters. I'll be looking for more books by Catherine Burns!

I have read all of the Aloha Lagoon stories and love them. Death of the Big Kahuna did not disappoint. A great mixture of fun, murder, mystery, romance, and humor. Plus a setting to literally die for. I so want to go to Aloha Lagoon. Carrie is a great heroine, likable and warm. The mystery was great, too. It kept me guessing all the way. Can't wait for another book in this terrific series. I received an ARC from the publisher for purposes of an unbiased review.

The dish of the day is murder, Hawaiian style, and author Catherine Bruns serves it up with a plate full of mystery! My town just had about six inches of snow (a lot for us) on the ground for two days. How fun is it that as I read DEATH OF THE BIG KAHUNA, the weather warmed and the snow started melting. Now as I write this review, the sun is shining and it is 68 degrees. That’s some talent you have Ms. Bruns. Talk about a story coming to life! ;-) DEATH OF THE BIG KAHUNA is the first book I’ve read in the Aloha Lagoon Mysteries (each book is written by a different author, and follows different characters), but is not my first book by Catherine Bruns. I’ve enjoyed her writing in her own two series, and am happy to say, I loved it with this book as well. Protagonist, Carrie Jorgenson, was an interesting character to get to know. Before we meet her in the book, it’s clear she didn’t have the best home life. That’s how she comes to be in Hawaii. She’s wants to change her life, and even dreams of being a star one day. Taking a waitress job and waiting for that dream to come true is what she has to do. I really liked that it became more than just a job to her, and she actually liked it. Though it was off to a shaky start pretty early on when she discovers the dead body of her boss. Author Bruns delivers a clever story of murder, mystery, and mayhem, all set against the backdrop of paradise. Carrie turns sleuth to discover who killed her boss. With the story being in first person, we readers see and hear everything from Carries point of view. This story was so real, it was like I could really her Carrie talking in my ear. I felt happiness when see did, and shared her fears with her. This all made for a story I simply couldn’t put down. Not through the investigation, not during the action filled reveal. Only when I had read the last, satisfying page of DEATH OF THE BIG KAHUNA, was I able to sit back and a breath. Very well done! There are also recipes in the back of the book, so don’t miss out on them!
