Overview

A team of award-winning sports reporters takes down the Great Satan of college sports: the Bowl Championship Series.

Every college sport picks its champion by a postseason tournament, except for one: Division I-A football. Instead of a tournament, fans are subjected to the Bowl Championship Series, an arcane mix of polling and mathematical rankings that results in just two teams playing for the championship. It is, without a doubt, the most hated institution in all of sports. A recent Sports Illustrated poll found that more than 90 percent of sports fans oppose the BCS, yet this system has remained in place for more than a decade. Built upon top-notch investigative reporting, Death to the BCS at last reveals the truth about this monstrous entity and offers a simple solution for fixing it.

Death to the BCS includes findings from interviews with power players, as well as research into federal tax records, Congressional testimony, and private contracts, revealing:

•The truth behind the "Cartel"-the anonymous suits who run the BCS and who profit handsomely by protecting it

?The flawed math and corruption that determine which teams participate in the national championship

?How the system hurts competition by perpetuating "cupcake" schedules

?How "mid-major" teams are systematically denied a chance to play for the championship

?How a comprehensive sixteen-team playoff plan can solve the problem while enhancing profitability

The first book to lay out the unseemly inner workings of the BCS in full detail, Death to the BCS is a rousing manifesto for bringing fairness back to one of our most beloved sports.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

There is one issue that President Obama and many Tea Baggers can agree: Football's annual Bowl Championship Series must go. A recent ESPN poll found that over eighty percent of sports fan oppose this arcane system, which has been condemned as an American version of the Soviet Presidium and a combination of shady motives and bad math. The BCS has been critiqued before, but never has it been skewered as adeptly as it is this new book researched and penned by three Yahoo! Sports reporters. Death to The BCS probes the inner workings of the secretive cartel that runs America's football championship and explains how they benefit from its faulty decisions. The definitive guide to college football's most hated institution.

this book is the reason we need a playoff system in CFB

as soon as i read the preface i thought to myself, " man this is going to be good" and believe you me, it was the best read i have read in a great reading while. i could not put it down especially when they started talking about the money these greedy guys make and who is all involved in the process of picking #1 and #2 teams. it makes perfect sense why the BCS does not want a playoff system. its the only book i could find that talks about the BCS as well. a must read for any CFB fan or my name isnt orville redenbacher....wait...its not......its razorback_fan

    Well researched, good read.

This book will throw a lot of big numbers, incomes, and expense accounts at you right away, and it's almost too overwhelming. But later in the book gets in to different situations in the past where a playoff system could have made a difference. Aside from all the dollar figures thrown at you during the first 4 chapters it's really nothing most people didn't already know. I will say if you are already not a fan of the BCS this book will only fuel your anger even more.

    Persuasive

Tells in detail why NCAA Division 1 football needs a playoff like every other college sport. Authors are blunt-spoken, but the facts they lay out show why they need to be.

    Yes!!!!

I was on the fence about the BCS, then I bought this book. It is such a true book and I think everyone who reads this will agree the BCS is a corrupt system that needs to be replaced with a playoff.

    2 thumbs down

Really hated the way this book was written.Reminded me of political propaganda, every other paragraph seemed to start with the phrase "they want you to believe".Too radical, not a good way to rally support for a cause.

Death to BCS: Life for December Delirium

This book will be the catalyst for the revolution necessary to fix the absurd, corrupt BCS system, and to prosecute its 'fat cat suits'. They are robbing college football of the "December Delirium" (a legitimate playoff) that the teams and fans deserve.
