Overview

Elise Kavanagh doesn't want to hunt demons anymore. It's been five years since she killed her last enemy, and life has been quiet since then. She went to college. Got a job, and then lost it. Made a friend or two. Lived a normal life. Now her former partner, a powerful witch named James Faulkner, wants Elise to fight one more time. The daughter of a coven member has been possessed, and Elise is the only exorcist nearby.

Becoming a hero again would mean risking discovery by old enemies. But digging into the case reveals that it might already be too late--bodies are disappearing, demons slither through the night, and the cogs of apocalypse are beginning to turn. Some enemies aren't willing to let the secrets of the past stay dead...

I DEVOURED (Just like the song from Shinedown, DEVOUR) this book. I'll have to look at the exact purchase time, but I think I finished it all, 500+ pages, in 24 hours. I turned the pages sooooo fast my fingertips are blistered! After reading SM Reine's DEATHS AVATAR it made sense to try this book as well. I am NOT disappointed. Have you ever gone to a movie and there was sooooo much action that you walk out the theater feeling like you just went 10 rounds with Mike Tyson? Well this is one of those kind of books. Almost NON-STOP action. You will soon see the name SM REINE with KELLEY ARMSTRONG, LAURELL K. HAMILTON, AND SHERYLNN KENYON. Mark my words. Also, this is NOT a YA book in the vain of Twighlight. SM REINE somehow manages to make the book palatable to Adults AND Young Adults. In short......press the BUY THIS button. You won't regret it. Now, where is that burn creme for my fingertips..........

I was excited when I first learned Reine has a new series coming out, since she’s one of my favourite indie authors. Where ‘Seasons of the Moon’-series is more about a teenage girl trying to find her way, Death’s Hand gives us an adult main character with a new set of problems. The book opens with a scene from days gone, where James meets Elise the first time — or ‘meets’ might be a wrong word since he finds her in the middle of Russian woods with a stack of dead bodies. The opening is intriguing, giving us insight, that there might be something wrong with Elise and it builds up from there. Death’s hand is an action packed page turner. The book starts to entwine plots that rise from Elise’s everyday life with burdens from her past, which she’s trying to obliterate. On several occasions I found myself thinking: “No you didn’t! How the heck is this going to get resolved?” — but every time Reine did a good job finding a solution that was believable. She also has a way of describing action; she can bring the scenes alive to the reader in a way where you can almost smell the blood and feel the bruises. I love kick-ass female characters and I love them more when they’re real with actual flaws instead of virtues masked as vices. She makes mistakes and pays for them. She gets hurt without magically being healed for the next fight. Her relationship with her mentor James is messy. I should note that Elise and James DO NOT have a romantic relationship. It’s more about their lives being tied together and the mentor-apprentice relationship which has evolved into mutual fondness and friendship. To be clear there’s hardly no romantic aspect at all in this book, just a little bit for the spice, but I didn’t even miss any. A deep romantic relationship would have shifted the book into something else. Even though the main character is an adult woman, this book’s style in general is more for the YA audience. So if you’re looking for an adult book, you might want to read the sample first. And if you swear to only read YA, you should still check this one out.

Strongly written with very tight, fast pacing and high tension. I was afraid at several points that there was no way to resolve situations, and I found Elise relatable (although I didn't want to be her or in her world at all). Appropriate for YA or adult paranormal. Blink and you'll miss the romance. I got this as a free book and I would like to read further works by this author.

Stats: 533 nook pages. Paranormal action-thriller with a dash of romance. Lots of gore and fighting. There is a novella prequil to this series, but I can't recall the title. Wondering why the second book is $4.99 and the third only $0.99??? Not sure if I'll buy more books in this series... I prefer a little more romance.

Read the whole series from start to finish within days. Could not get enough! Really enjoyed this dark look at heaven and hell, and what happens when their denizens get mixed up in meddling in events on earth, as if humans don't do a good enough job at screwing up. Drawing from many religious myths and religion stories, be sure to set aside your own in order to thoroughly enjoy the story as it unfolds.

Very interesting storyline and a good intro to this author. Interactions between the characters are believeable. Very interested to see if the other books in the series are as compelling.

Really enjoyed this free book! I've been ditching free books half-read left and right here lately it seems, so was thrilled to finally have something worth finishing! This is a very "violent" book, but I don't think it was overdone. Just graphic descriptions (and more realistic-seeming than many in the paranormal vein that I've read). Character development was good, though it left a lot of unanswered questions - so I'm glad I came across the series after the author finished the 7-book arc! I'm definitely interested in seeing where the characters go from here!
