Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
A young Guatamalan Indian woman's escape from a gang of human traffickers triggers several murders, and Harry Brock (Fear Death by Water) is asked to help the local police in Avola, FL, investigate. He also worries about his ill friend, Tucker, recently attacked by feral pigs, and must puzzle out how to help his traumatized adopted daughter, who escaped a sexual attack. VERDICT Here are enough twists and turns for a satisfying mystery that might appeal to readers of Chris Knopf.
Kirkus Reviews
Harry Brock (Fear Death by Water, 2008, etc.) returns to investigate underground human trafficking. When the local police sergeant and captain come to visit Brock in the Hammock, his southwest Florida wilderness hideaway, he knows from his past history with the two that it's not a social call. They want to use Brock's experience as a private investigator to look into a local crime group they believe has changed the focus of its business from selling drugs to selling people: young women who are in the States illegally. Brock takes the case, unaware that his usually hard-as-nails ex Katherine has been having a breakdown of her own since her teenage daughter Minna was sexually assaulted. When Brock talks Katherine into bringing Minna for a visit to recuperate, he's surprised at how pleased he is with the fact that Katherine has accompanied her on the extended stay. But his rekindled feelings for Katherine have to be put on hold as Brock, with the help of his new partner So-adora, starts to get some leads on the case, leaving Katherine and Minna to tend the home front and care for Brock's elderly neighbor Tucker LaBeau. Brock, who thinks he's the only one capable of protecting either So-adora or himself, will find enough danger to test his mettle. Newcomers may feel as if they're arriving late at a party where introductions have already been made. For fans, it's more of the same moody Florida melodrama.

The continual escapdes of Harry Brock in Florida is a solid entry filled with sleuthing and personal twists

    Death's Other Kingdom
    Kinley E. Roby
    Five Star, Sep 2009, $25.95
    ISBN: 9781594147913

The Guatemalan woman was abducted in Mexico and brought to Florida by human traffickers to sell her, but something goes wrong in Avola, Florida; two of her kidnappers are killed and she apparently escaped. The police and Salvamento director Sonadora Asturias ask private investigator Harry Brock to find the missing female before she runs into more trouble and to investigate a local crime ring that has apparently changed its mission from drugs to young girls.

At Hammock where he lives Harry is worried about his best friend neighbor Tucker, who is very ill having been attacked by wild pigs and is concerned about his teenage daughter Minna is emotionally shattered having been sexually assaulted while Harry must deal with knowing he pathetically still loves her mom, his ex-wife Katherine.

The continual escapdes of Harry Brock in Florida (see NOW COMES DEATH and TWO IN THE CHURCHYARD LIE) is a solid entry filled with sleuthing and personal twists; however newcomers will find it difficult to fully grasp the hero's family crisis without having read how he got to that point. Though lacking the humor brought to FEAR DEATH BY WATER by Tucker's sidekicks (Harry's older daughter brought a pregnant pause to the tale), the story line is fast-paced whether the subplot focuses on the troubles of Harry's family (know wonder he hides in Florida), his neighbor's health, or the dark sinister human trafficking.
