    I Also Recommend:

    It's Green. 'Nuff Said

Here's the thing, if you've ever read Simon Green, then you know the style. As always, there's a lot of repetition with synopsises and especially phrases. ("Can we shoot it?" "Only if you want to make it mad." and "I wouldn't trust [insert] as far as I could spit in a hurricane.") But these phrases are kinda like coming home to an old friend. The characters are all archetypes that Green uses in pretty much everything else he writes (i.e. the reluctant hero, the bad-ass girlfriend, and several other characters whose sole purpose is just to provide some entertainment) But this is what we not only come to expect from Green, but love. Definitley worth reading.

    you're joking, right?

Unfortunately this book does not live up to the hype in the other reviews I have read here. I begin to suspect they were written by personal friends of the author. The story itself is ... fair. Not horrible, not attention-grabbing, just ... fair. It would have been better if the style of writing weren't so bad. The author is stilted, the dialogue is repetitious and everyone but EVERYONE seems to talk in the same patterns. It also seems that the text was padded a bit -- I know it isn't true but over and over again it appears as if characters are referred to only by their complete names. It isn't as if there are so many characters that they had to be identified every time they were in dialogue or plot. The worst part is, I gave Green a chance and bought the second book in the series thinking it had to be better. Sadly I was incorrect. The one good bit of news is that Green and his publisher have my money at this point -- I can assure you it'll be the last time I purchase any thing by this author.

Good but with many writing issues.

I would say more its 2 and 1/2 stars. I liked the characters and the world...but this book needed an editor. Some scenes were unnecessary and some characters. The writing style left me a bit unsatisfied.

    Great space opera!

I was looking for a good space opera. This is a great, fun read. This story is fast and with multiple storylines that are all interesting.

a comic book without the pictures

A combination space opera sci-fi and quest fantasy novel, and not too good as either. Numerous plot lines are established, to the greater glory of the continuing series and the confusion of the reader. Many wooden characters speak in a stilted, jokey fashion. If you must read Simon R. Green, try the Darkside series much more inventive, and the books lack the 'padded' feel of this one.

    All Original

This book is full of creativity and artfulness. The characters are so dynamic, and the style of battle is something you wouldn't expect in a science fiction. Two thumbs up. And my toes too.

    Looking for something new?

I have my favorite authors (Asimov/Herbert)but I wanted to read someting from a new (to me)author. I was really surprised by this book. I judged it on it's cover :-) And I enjoyed it so much I have gone out and got the next two in the series! I love serial fiction and this one is one of the best! Simon's concepts are original and the butt kicking action is non stop!

If you like Star Wars, this is for you!

I read the first Deathstalker novel five years ago and became a Simon R. Green fan instantly. This is the greatest series I ever read in my life and I mean that. It has everything; sword fights, space battles, sadistic villians, brave heroes and touches of humor. If you like those kinds of things you will be hooked to the Deathstalker series.

One of the best Sci-Fi books ever!

This book and the whole series were great. It was one of those books that when u finish reading it u hate the author for not makin it longer....ALOT longer. This was actually the first Sci-Fi book i had ever read, and i have found few since that have rival'd it. The only thing i dont like is that in his other books too he repeats alot of the same lines from other books of different Genres. But that is of little relavance if u are still enjoying The Deathstalker Saga. Happy Reading!
