Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Debian: Now we're talking serious Linux. Hard core. Rock solid, constantly improving -- thanks to the efforts of a worldwide, extraordinarily capable development community -- but not exactly designed for sale at your local shopping mall. Want to explore Debian without renouncing the rest of your life? Here's your book: Debian/GNU Linux for Dummies.

You get the complete Debian GNU/Linux distribution on two CD-ROMs -- plus start-to-finish guidance from Michael Bellomo, a long-time Linux/Unix author who's an outstanding escort for uninitiated *nix users. Bellomo walks you through the ins and outs of Debian installation and configuration (we don't need no stinkin' setup wizards); introduces the root account; and shows how to use the command line -- "the true path to freedom." You'll learn how to make your way around the Debian file system (and actually find your files); then configure XWindows and GNOME (should you insist upon your GUI security blanket).

There are concise chapters on editing with vi and gnotepad+; connecting Debian to the Internet; and setting up Netscape for web browsing, email, and newsgroups. There's also a solid introduction to securing your Debian system. Long-time Linux hackers might not choose the Dummies(r) version, but for everyone else, it's a great way to leverage Debian's power without getting tripped up by its austere interface and documentation. His 15 books include Special Edition Using Word 2000 and Upgrading & Fixing Networks For Dummies®, Second Edition.

    Skims the surface.

I picked up this book at a bn store hoping to get Debian set up and running. I have used RedHat Linux 6.2, and i am a Computer Science student in College, so i'm no slouch. Unfortunately, this book simply did not offer the kind of depth of information needed to set up and configure a Debian system. Debian is a serious Linux user's distribution. It is honestly not as easy to set up and use as some of the other distributions. (But i still think it's a great distribution.) I plan to purchase O'Reilly's Learning Debian/GNU Linux, which has been recommended to me. In short, if you want to set up a Debian system, you either need lots of Linux experience, or a big, complete reference book. A (relatively) short book like Debian for Dummies just doesn't cut the mustard.
