Loved, loved, loved this book. It was the first book I have read by Ruth Harris, it was so engaging and true to life. Held my interest throughout the book. The characters and the time frames were all so real. It was as if I was back in that time. The morals and standards that we have lived through come out very clearly along with all the family dynamics, love and dysfunction.

This isn't my normal genre but I did enjoy it and do plant to read the others in the series. I got it free from a promotion by the author and want to thank her - as it has expanded my horizions!! Appreciate it and the well told story!!

Fascinating book about 3 women's lives at different times in the 20th century, all united by their relationship (of some sort) with a particular man - his college sweetheart and wife, their child, and his mistress. You see their development over time - a different period of time for each woman, but covering several decades in each case. You also see the man's development. The book begins and ends with the same character as the focus of attention, many years apart in her life. Various portions of the book are told from the viewpoint of different ones of the women and put in context by recitations of the most important historical events of that era. The book is long, so after finishing it, I went back to the beginning, because I had forgotten how it started. To my surprise, the story held up so well that I ended up reading it a second time right away, which I normally can't stand to do, because few stories retain much attraction for a reader who knows what is going to happen. But this one did. Knowing what happens later only enriched the reading. There was more explicit sex than I like to see in a book, but it would have been hard to tell this story without it. I would like to see a similar book, about different people, without the sex-fixations of these characters. Since I lived through most of these decades, I know that the stories told here are an authentic reflection of the experiences of some people, but there are others, and I'd like to read about them.

The characters were well developed & the story held my interest. The historical aspects were interesting also. Well written Ms Harris.

This is less of a story and more of a narrative history of a few characters' lives, though an incomplete history of them. A few loosely followed story lines that never seemed much to matter to the author so were not followed through. The writing is good and there is depth there and I cared about the people, but just when things got interesting, one was dropped for another and no going back. I like to get vested in the characters' lives with a sort of promise from the author to get to the bottom of it. Was disappointed with the way the book ended, but wholly unsuprised.

This isn't a bad book...it's a sad book....for the same reason I don't watch Mad Men I'm not gushing about this book. As a child of the sixties growing up in an upper class suburb where Stepford Wives and wife swopping was a norm, I can tell you that the story rings true. I think that it felt like I was watching a cross between Mrs. Robinson and Love Story. I have another Ruth Harris book I will eventually read. This was almost too soapy for me

This was ok, a little disjointed as to how it jumped from one woma to the next, but the ending sucked. The story was going along then suddenly it was over! It was as if the author got tired of writing and just quit. No resolution, no end of story for any characters, nothing. Just....the end.

Stopped reading after part 1, like reading a soap opera.
